How else does one carry one’s driver license and insurance card? Plus credit/debit cards?
I do NOT carry a wallet, after watching my best friend carry around a George Costanza Wallet, having to take it out and place it on the bar before he could sit down, and forgetting it. Can’t tell you how many times we’d rush back to the stadium, then the restaurant, then the bar, to try to find it.
His wife and I grabbed it and tried (just like that Seinfeld clip) to get him to slim down:
“Okay, Fred Meyers Card, we’re a thousand miles from the closest store. West Seattle Speedway: Free slot car racing Tuesday nights with this card. Rudy’s Junction Barbershop Cut Club Card. Pretty sure those last two are out of business…”
“C’mon! I neeeed those in case I’m in Seattle.”
“I think you’d have more than thirty seconds’ warning. Leave those at home and pack them IF you’re going to Seattle!”
But, alas, like other hoarders, he couldn’t give any of them up.
Now, after my first trip to Europe (so early 20s), I started keeping everything in my front pocket. But after seeing my Costanza friend refuse therapy, I pared down to bare minimum in a tiny card case.
I appreciate that all my insurance cards are paper or thin plastic, they all fit in one slot (with vax card, copied smaller to fit).
One credit card*, one debit card, and a driver’s license.
Oh, and I’ve trimmed down to two keys: house and car (no fob, so my keys fit in that tiny pocket above my front right pocket). Trav’lin’ light/feel so riiiight… ![]()
.
*My wife has maybe a dozen: “But if I use my Kohl’s/Macys/Arlan’s/Gimbels/BonMarché card, I get 2% off!”
(Pfft, I wouldn’t get out of my jammies for 2%. Tell me when they up it to Fitty Percent…)
.
TL/DR: Wallet til 20-ish, front pocket slim card case since (minimal one since 40-ish).
I’ve always carried a wallet and still do, it’s always in my front pocket. Never understood how people can have them in the back and sit on them.
Though I probably really don’t need to, I think I’ve only once in the past year I’ve had to use a physical card instead of using Apple Pay, but I am so used to it being there. I do have a MagSafe wallet that attaches to my phone and can fit a couple cards if I really didn’t want to carry it.
I carry one of these. Drivers license, 2 credit cards, ~$50 in the center. It’s all in a single package that I can move from one pair of pants to another without leaving anything behind.
ETA: if the link doesn’t work, it’s a wallet with three card slots, an ID slot on the other side and a slot for folded bills in the middle. (RFID blocking, too)
I carry my ID, health insurance card,AAA card and some cash. Wallet is a necessity.
My recent wallets don’t include a section for photos. That’s not needed with phones.
I use a coin purse for my must have cards. I called it a wallet. Close enough.
I too think it’s ridiculous to claim to not use a wallet and then mention that the neccessary plastic travels with the phone case.
Same here. I would have voted “both” but it was either/or. 71 year old male.
Stuff in my wallet:
Driver’s license
Credit & debit cards
Medical insurance card
Grocery store club card
Clipper card (for public transit)
AAA card
Costco membership card
Cash
Movie theater gift card
A few miscellaneous business cards
Define “wallet”.
I have a phone case with some credit card slots and a thin pouch where I can stuff a train ticket and another card or two.
I own more traditional wallets but don’t carry them.
This is what the phone case looks like:
It has:
Driver licence
Credit card
Bank card
Staff ID for cheap train travel
About $30 cash
A train ticket
Some dude’s business card.
It used to have more but I recently cleaned it out.
A few months ago I realized that every time I left the house I put my phone and my wallet in my pocket and the wallet only left my pocket when I needed to use a credit card or show my license to someone. I ditched the wallet and got a phone case which holds four cards. All of the other stuff that was in my wallet (insurance cards and the like) sits at home. I had been carrying that stuff around for years and never took it out of the wallet - literally never.
On the rare occasion where I need cash I just put the bills in my pocket alongside the phone.
I know someone who actually doesn’t carry a wallet. He carries a pile of credit cards, drivers license, insurance cards, etc. and a pile of cash - each wrapped in the sort of rubber band you might find wrapped around broccoli. But a case for your phone with slots for credit cards , or a pocket on the back of your phone is still functionally a wallet. It’s not like there is a single design called a wallet - there are bifold, trifold and front-pocket wallets. Wallets that also carry a checkbook and/or have a change compartment. Travel wallets that are the correct size for a passport and are worn around the neck and so on and so on. If all of those designs are wallets, so is a phone with a stick-on pocket or a phone cash with slots for cards.
If you keep your cash in a wallet (or current account), how will you show off a roll of bills big enough to choke a horse?
I carry a Multi-Purpose EDC Vape Pouch Bag, Vape Case,Tactical Bag Pouch, Military Nylon Utility Tactical Waist Pack Camping Hiking Pouch(Army Green) which contains all my every day carry stuff, including a knife, hearing aid batteries, wallet, etc.
But the wallet in it is largely redundant. All my credit cards, IDs, etc are in my pouch. If the pouch is too bulky I’ll put what I need in the wallet and stick that in my pocket.
Hate to be that guy, but it doesn’t take much to choke a horse.
When Mac (my gf’s ancient horse, now deceased) was in his final few years he had worn his teeth away to nothing. We fed him a slurry of expensive horse milkshake. A few times he found something he wanted to eat and it would only go halfway down (see: equine choke).
It was my job when he choked to pass a tube up his nostril and into his stomach, forcing the offending material down.
Thread’s done…
Up until about 3 months ago, I carried a purse that had my wallet, phone, etc. in it. I have a wallet-type phone case and I love it. In it, I carry my driver’s license, credit card, insurance card, and a small amount of cash. So now I only carry my phone, which fits nicely in my jacket pocket. I may have to switch to a small purse come summer when I’m not usually wearing a jacket. I don’t like carrying my phone in my hand all the time.
No, no… Thread’s only off the rails. This is where stuff gets good!
I’m a belt and suspenders kinda guy so I would have voted both. I have the vaccine record in my wallet and the vaccine passport QR code on my iPod.

I guess I’m too old to ever fully trust those electronic doohickeys.
