I have a photo on my phone, but it’s just for safekeeping in case I lose the card (which is in a drawer at home), not because I expect to have to display it.
Is it just me, or does that sound like a song waiting to happen?
I suppose I could get away with not carrying a wallet, based on some of the alternatives people are suggesting here. I’m a 43 yo woman who doesn’t carry a purse. I have always kept a wallet in my back pocket but I’ve been trying to not put it in my back pocket for a while now. Coat pocket for sure when I’ve got a coat, and side pocket when I don’t. This is increasingly tricky due to how women’s pants are styled but I am able to hang on.
My wallet is made out of fabric, on which the below Futurama scene/meme is printed, and it often gets a chuckle from clerks when they see it, and it never fails to make me laugh.
I took that to be the subject of the thread. Do you use a traditional wallet or do you carry the absolute necessities in your phone case?
I agree it’s unspoken, but I think this thread was a spinoff from a conversation elsewhere.
I’m seeing more and more phone cases that have a slot/space for things like that.
I’d call what you have pictured a wallet
40 year old man here, and yes I carry a wallet. If carrying a wallet has somehow gone out of style, I guess I missed the memo – as did my two teenage sons, 14 and 17, who both carry standard men’s bifold wallets in their pockets. My wife has one of those long women’s wallets that are designed to hold everything from a checkbook to extra keys.
My wallet is a cheap craptastic one I got at Walmart years ago when I didn’t have much discretionary income. The cards are pretty loose in it and this thread has prompted me to start fishing Amazon for a new one. I don’t like having a lump in my pocket, so a few of the thin ones mentioned upthread might work. Thanks, all.
Although I said I carried a wallet, it is just a card wallet. But it has at least three credit cards and as many debit cards, driver’s licence, Medicare card, hospital cards for at least three different hospitals (oddly, every hospital I use requires you to have a card specific for that hospitals, although all three are part of the McGill hospital system), McGill ID, citizenship card, and a couple of discount cards (one from a bookstore, one from a sushi joint that gives you free meal after 10 punches on the card). It is certainly true that I could decide each time I leave the apartment which of those cards I actually have to carry that day, but it is convenient not to have to think about that each time. Then I carry cash in a money clip in a front pocket.
Yeah, I ticked the “carry a wallet “ option.
The picture is of two. One open and one closed. In case it’s not clear.
So, OP and the others who have everything on their phones, is your phone (with or without a phone case) small enough to securely carry it in a pocket, or do you have to walk around with your phone in your hand?
I left my wallet in El Segundo.
That reference probably indicates my age already, but I’m 59. I’ve carried a wallet since I was about 8 years old (that one had a cowboy on it). It keeps my cards and IDs (very few), and I carry cash money in a separate pocket in a money clip. It works for me!
Mine with a case is small enough to fit in a pocket* if I’m wearing jeans or similar pants ( the pants I wore to work had tiny, useless pockets) although I usually have a bag of some sort. I have another case I don’t use very often that is similar to this one. My husband has something like this which fits into his pocket as well as his phone alone does.
- although the top of the phone protrudes above the pocket.
I have a phone case that has a slot that I have my DL, insurance card, Debit and a CC. There is just enough room to slip in a couple of bills. It has a magnetic close and I’ve had it for over a year and no issues with the card.
I haven’t carried a wallet in over 5 years. For my previous phone I had an elastic pouch that stuck on to the back that held those items. This is much more secure. With the old one, if it was dropped just wrong, the items would fall out.
I like it because I never leave home without my DL or anything because I’d never go anywhere without my phone. As long as I have that, I have everything I need.
ETA, I have an IPhone X and with the case, it fits easily in all of my pants pockets, or coat during the winter.
Don’t hate to be that guy, this is the good stuff!
I’ll kick with the crowd that says if you glue a wallet to a phone case, it’s still a wallet.
It’s smaller than my traditional wallet. I carry it in my pocket.
Whippersnappers also killed houses and diamonds. Or so I hear. Damned kids and their (delicious) avocado toast.
For what it’s worth, I carry a wallet. My credit cards, ID, everyone’s insurance & vaccine cards and lip balm.
I have to say I’m relieved that so many 'dopers have wallets. From the poll here, I was certain that I’d be like the only one who still had such an archaic thing, and that there was some magic tech I had missed out on that meant I didn’t have to actually have a wallet anymore but I was just too old to know about it.
Clearly your phone case is (or is being used as) “a small wallet”. So you carry less stuff than an old fart. Woopee.
I carry a wallet covered in Batman logos. It contains cash (I always carry cash just in case), my state issued ID, my health insurance cards (always handy to have in case of an emergency), several grocery store loyalty cards (I got them with fake info. These days, they verify that kind of thing), my debit card, and my library card.
I have much more confidence in my wallet and the plastic cards it contains to stand up to impact and water.
ETA I sometimes carry a back pack which can hold- books, toys, magic tricks, a hoodie, an umbrella, a bottle opener ( I don’t care for beer but love odd soft drinks) and so much more. Functionally, my back pack is a man purse.
