Yup. At least we love each other.
Actually, I would have thought not. But last year sometime when I had a really bad bout in the hospital with kidney problems, I posted about the horrors of being hospitalized, and GingerOfTheNorth came into the thread and said something like “Oh, I was wondering where you’d been”. So I guess someone would.
fishbicycle, I would notice if you went missing, I think, because I tend to think of you as a mirror-image of me. Just from reading your posts, it seems we have lots of common. . .issues.
No one would miss me (and a few would be grateful).
Nobody would notice if I stopped posting either. It’s not like I’m extremely prolific, or a noted authority on a particular subject (maybe I could be, if I had more time/inclination to post giant essays on film or TV). I’m just glad nobody has posted a thread called “I wish cbawlmer would shut up.” Maybe they have in the Pit, but I wouldn’t know because I very rarely venture in there.
Nope, unless they were thinking “Thank god that bitch hasn’t been around”
See! I told you I’d be ignored!
Now I’m really depressed.
Someone (not me) whose absence did get noticed.
Me? Maybe I’d be noticed by participants in ME/Israel related threads if I repeatedly failed to show up there… otherwise I doubt it.
I’d notice several of you…eventually.
When I did take a hiatus of about a month, last year was it? A couple of peple did notice and asked me about it. One of them was someone I e-mail quite frequently, though, so it was natural to ask.
And you know, “noticing” and troubling to ask are two totally different things. It’s easy to go in a thread and say “Oh, alice_in_wonderland really knows about this, hope she checks in, haven’t seen her in a while”, post your response, and then totally forget you were wondering where **alice **was!
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say probably not . When that Winston guy stopped I was devastated. But he came back . WHEW !
I"m kidding Winston. Don’t take me off the Henchman list again I don’t want to lose my place .
Yep. I’d miss you both (re: velvetjones). norinew, GingerOfTheNorth and all the rest, too. By the way, I’ve thought of telling you this before, tdn (and haven’t), but your posts are often the highlight of my day. You’ve made me outright giggle before, for crying in the night, and I’m soooo not the giggling type. Thanks for that.
A few people might after a long time, but half the time I wonder if my posts have even been read…so perhaps not.
I don’t see how people keep up with that sort of thing. I could have a heated debate with someone and not remember a day later who it was.
Y’know, there was a long thread with people musing about the mysterious disappearance of Gabriella. I wonder about her too, as she had some astonishing, informative and humorous posts. I lot of Dopers noticed her absence.
I don’t believe I’d be missed too horribly. I like to think I can contribute around here, but I know that I don’t always get noticed…
Brendon Small
I’m gonna guess not. I’m not really a poster of any substance - more of a “Hey good luck” and “welcome to the boards” poster. The dope is more of a hobby than anything for me.
I suspect my absence would be noticed pretty soon in the Reformed Slob Club (although I seem to have lost my membership card somewhere under a stack of dirty dishes) or when someone opened a polyamory thread. Maybe if there was an herbal question, but we can go months without those, so it might be a while. Maybe a fertility/pregnancy/parenting thread would miss me.
Other than that, I think half the hamsters would trudge down to the unemployment office, and a lot more other posters would post instead, as it seems I simply act as a Greek chorus most of the time!
Not at all. I share the same traits as Joey P, cher3 and StGermain…a 1999 sign on and fewer than 5,000 contributions. Not enough there to draw much attention.
OTOH, alice_in_wonderland, fishbicycle, FairyChatMom and CalMeacham, don’t sell yourselves short.
Oh, and whynot don’t sell yourself short, either. Maybe it’s just coincidence but for some reason we seem to be attracted to similar threads, but you contribute.
I think the question should be if anyone would notice an im-poster in your place.
If I suddenly show up in GD thoughtfully expressing my beliefs and skillfully arguing in the struggle against ignorance…well, then it’s an im-poster.
What a great pun, huh? Imposter, im-poster? Huh? Eh…
Well, I’m not as modest and self-effacing as all of you. Some people would definitely notice that I was gone. I’m not saying it would be lots of people, but maybe, er, ten or so.
Oh, yeah, sure, I contribute. But so do you and every other person in this thread. There’s not a single one I don’t recognize, and I could probably come up with at least one personal fact about each one. They are none of them “pixels on a screen”, to bring up a recently turned phrase.
But there are some posters who are even more than that - they are the real characters. Those are the ones that don’t have to be gone long for the timbre of the room to change, and you notice it. You don’t even really have to wait for a thread on Bush-bashing to notice when Liberal’s gone, or a thread on Tolkein or medicine to notice that **Qadop **is MIA. We missed more than Sampiro’s rambling stories while he was on his sabbatical. I guess I might be pushing that line, but I’m not sure if I cross it or not.
There’s a bunch of people who don’t stand out, period. There are others who stand out in one or two fields, and when a thread in that field comes up, then people notice they’re not posting. Then there are a select few who would be noticed even if “their” field were never to come up again. I think I’m part of the second group.
Really, it not a question we can accurately answer of ourselves, is it? It’s much more about how impactful our presence is to others, and we can’t really know that.
