Without a doubt, without a nose! If smileys were supposed to have noses, God would have made them that way.
With. I often make one without at first, then decide it looks like crap.
Either way.
Some people try to give me crap when I write it with a nose. My answer is: when you can tell Howard Stern to go w/o his nose (and make him do it) then get back to me.
I don’t make smileys. I make frowneys. And damn it, don’t tell me to smile. This is how I always look. 
Without a nose, anyone who makes it with a nose will be among the first executed when the revolution comes.

Depends on the typeface. Sometimes it needs the nose, sometimes it doesn’t.
