Dodgeball details (spoilers)

I bought Dodgeball for my brother for Christmas and then bought myself a copy. The last time I watched it, I realized that the treasure chest the winnings are presented in is inscribed “Deuz ex machina.”

El Elvis Rojo noticed that in the commercial for the revitalized Average Joe’s that ends the movie, Justin is rubbing the protruding belly of the cheerleader he was in love with.

Anyone else notice details like these?

There’s lots of little jokes in there. I think Dodgeball is one of the smartest, most underrated comedies of the past five years…but that’s just me.

I love the thread of WWII references running through Cotton and Pepper’s commentary on the tournament: the German team is “a blitzkrieg…here to advance their empire on American soil, appeasment be damned!”, and GloboGym is going to “drop the A-Bomb” on the Japanese team. And then the dodgeball tape is from “Uber-American Instructional Films, since 1938.”

And then there’s the Jabberwocky references in the same commentary, which was my biggest laugh of the movie. I think I was the only one in the theater who got it, though.

The Uber-American instructional film was great. “Do you want to take a break from that fine lead-based paint to learn about dodgeball?”
