Does anybody think the Hardee's ads are effective?

Hardee’s Restaurant (fast food like McDonalds, for those who don’t have one in the area) is advertising a Steak & Onion sandwich.
I first saw the ad on a poster in a window. The poster was a bottle of mouthwash. WTF? Apparently, the onions give you such bad breath they make you want to guzzle Listerine.
One of their TV ads shows a guy running into a washroom, spraying 4-5 shots of breath spray into his mouth, cupping his hands over his mouth and checking his breath. He then proceeds to empty the entire canister of spray into his mouth.
Another ad show a guy in a convenience store, eating one of these sandwiches (about half the size of his head) and after taking a bite, he grabs a bottle of mouthwash off the shelf, takes a huge swallow, and gargles right there in the store.
Now, I don’t know about anybody else, but these ads do NOT make me want to run out and buy one of these sandwiches. They DO make me want to launch the lunch I’ve just eaten.
Does ANYBODY find these ads effective? Does anybody work in the advertising business? Don’t they typically “test run” these ads before starting an ad campaign?

I can’t stand these ads (incidentally, out here in CA they are Carl’s Jr commercials, but same thing).

The guy spraying the breath spray pisses me off. By the time he’s done, his whole mouth area is shiny with spray, and his facial expression is just gross.

How f-ing bad can the frickin’ onions be? I mean geez, I don’t think I’d need to be that dramatic after eating an order of onion rings, much less a burger with some onions on it.

Of course, Carl’s ads in the past several years have ALWAYS turned me off to their food, so this is no different.

I do not patronize Hardee’s, nor do I know anyone who does.

I apologize if I offend anyone… That place grosses me out.

So no, I do not find those ads effective.

Some fast food commercials manage to make their products LOOK appetizing, no matter how vile they are in real life.
These Hardee’s commercials just make me want to wretch.

Sounds like Hardees has definitely gone down hill since the Carl’s Jr folk moved in. It used to be one of my favorites, back in the day when they charcoal broiled their burgers. I loved their Mushroom and Swiss Burger - did it survive the takeover? (I haven’t been to a Hardees since my brother was married in the mid 90’s, in Colorado Springs)

Hurry on down to Hardee’s, where the burgers are charcoal-broiled!

They’re gonna hate me in the home.

“Nurse Ratched, wheel Mr. essvee into the solarium until he stops singing that Hardee’s commercial from the 70’s.”

No, those ads are revolting. I change the channel whenever they come on. They have ensured that I will never, ever buy one of those sandwiches. (And I really might have, otherwise.)

Ugh. I haven’t seen the commercial, but it sounds awful. Most of the Hardee’s in the Twin Cities are closed already, but this looks like the sort of ad campaign that could kill the rest. So, Canthearya, you needn’t worry. If your local Hardee’s isn’t boarded up now, it will be soon. I can’t say the same for you, RAWDuke, since, according to some other posters in that thread, Hardee’s in Duluth is alive and well (for now).

Just imagining the mixture of onions (which I do like) and minty mouthwash makes me want to gag.

The ones that drove me bonkers were those for the “Six Dollar Burger (only $3.95)”. I can only imagine the confusion this must have caused less-than-observant patrons and counter workers.

BTW- the roast beef sandwiches have always been pretty tasty.

I’ve always been a bigger fan of Hardees food over Micky D’s or BK. For fast food, they’re not bad.
But, jeez, what are they thinking? Do they watch their own commercials before they put them on the air?

They have a new one for a breakfast sandwich. A quiz: Fill in the blanks.
“Three Little _"
"Male Chauvansit
” (sorry about the spelling)
etc

“Where did all the pigs go? Hardees Sausage, Ham and Bacon Sandwich.”
YUCK!

Hate them. Hate them. Hate them. They and Menthos are the only products that I boycott just because of their commercials. Even worse are their radio ads that are supposed to appeal to 17 year old boys by being complete jerks.

“People who like ice skating eat (competitor’s) burgers”
“People who are offended by fart jokes eat (competitor’s) burgers”
“People who get A’s on math tests eat (competitor’s) burgers”

Guess what Carl. Now I only eat (competitor’s) burgers!

This thread is better suited for IMHO. I’ll move it for you.

I heard one of the Carls Jr. commercials on the radio today for the first time. The commercial has this guy who is being rebuffed by a girl he is trying to kiss or something. She won’t tell him why she is not interested (you don’t find out until the end of the ad that it is becuase of the onions).

So, this guy is trying to figure out why she is not interested, and accuses her of being a Lesbian!

Are they intentionally trying to run their business into the ground?

I’m glad to hear that many others feel the way I do about these ridiculous Hardee’s/Carls Jr. ads…Apparently they ARE working to drive the joint(s) in the ground, because sometime last year, they closed down all but one Carl’s in this part of town, an area of roughly 60 square miles. I believe there were something like 5 more…Hardee’s used to rock right along with McDonald’s and Burger King, now they SUCK…I mean, geez, they gotta death wish…

Haven’t seen that commercial but the 6 dollar burger campaign has gotten on my last nerve.

If it’s a 6 dollar burger, then why do they charge $3.95 for it?!

Man, I’m hungry.

You sound very familiar RW. I had a teacher who boycotted Mentos just because of the commercials too.

                                                        -jeff-

And I hate the ads, too, but I suspect I’d enjoy the food. I like burgers with onions and mushrooms and other flavorful additions.
