Does anyone recognize this 'All in the Family' bit?

This is a longshot, but just in case…

I’ve been on a bit of an All in the Family kick lately, and have been watching dozens of old episodes. Such an amazing show and timeless performances!

I was watching one episode, “Joey’s Baptism,” where Archie is determined to sneak his grandson Joey out to church to get the baby baptized (since Mike is an atheist, he and Gloria don’t plan on baptizing the boy). Anyway, Edith knows Archie’s plans and so she locks the door to the closet to prevent Archie from getting his coat – it’s winter – and takes the key.

Now at this point I thought I remembered what was about to happen. Sure enough, she hides the key down her blouse. However, what I thought was about to transpire didn’t, and while Archie was irritated with her, he didn’t yell or grab at her “chests” and he eventually gave up, instead grabbing a sweater from a charity box and the episode proceeded in its inevitable course.

Here’s how I thought this scene transpired: Archie is trying to get at the key, and Edith finally hides it down her blouse. Archie is brought up short and the following dialogue transpires:

ARCHIE (disgustedly): Where did you get a low class dodge like that?

EDITH (protectively covering her chest): That’s not a low class dodge, that’s a high class dodge! Bette Davis done it. Joan Crawford done it. Doris Day done it. (she names a few others I believe.)

ARCHIE: Well, Franchot Tone and Erroll Flynn and Rock Hudson (or whoever the actors really were) shoulda done this here!

And he tries to stick his hand down her shirt to grab the key. They struggle for a little while and – just as Mike and Gloria walk into the house – Archie yells:

“EDITH! Edith, give it here! I gotta have it!”

Mike and Gloria just stand there, gawking. Archie and Edith realize they’re being watched and Archie turns around. And Mike says with a gleam in his eye: “You’re an animal!”

It was hysterical. But the only other instance that I can remember Archie trying to get at a key (or something that was locked away) was later on, when their little niece Stephanie was being accused of stealing things and they suspected she was hiding stuff in a keepsake box. However, Stephanie only arrived after Mike and Gloria left for California, so that can’t be it, right?

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I know I didn’t make this scene up, so what episode does it belong to?

Well, I can only suggest that if you’re searching for something involving Stephanie, look at episodes of Archie Bunker’s Place, the short-lived follow-up series to All in the Family, unless you’re sure that Jean “Edith” Stapleton was in the scene (her character “died” in the time between the two shows).

I remember the scene the OP is talking about. I don’t think it was a key that Edith was trying to keep away from Archie. I think it was money, or a note, or a phone number, something like that.

Edith was in ABP actually. Jean Stapleton appeared in most episodes and then left before the second season. And there’s no doubt that it was her in the scene. None. Zippo. The dialogue makes no sense for anyone but her.

Further, I am 99.9% sure that Mike was the one to walk in and say “You’re an animal” to Archie. I can hear Rob Reiner’s voice as he said it – with that grin of his.

So I don’t really think it is a Stephanie episode. I just can’t recall another instance (besides the baptism episode) where Edith hid a key from Archie.

Edited to add: Ooh thanks, Robot Arm. I’m glad someone else remembers this! You may well be right, maybe it’s not a key. It’s certainly something small enough to stick down there.

Edited again to add: Ooooh your mentioning a phone number makes me start to wonder: is it possible that it involves the episode where Mike is waiting for word on whether he got the job in California? With Archie wanting to rip up the phone message? I don’t remember if he did, but it wouldn’t surprise me… hmm…

Ah, I seem to be mistaken in my recollection of ABP. Noted.

I’m looking through the episode list on IMDb. It might have been “Edith’s Winning Ticket” in which she has a winning lottery ticket she bought for Louise Jefferson.

No prob, Bryan Ekers! It was a logical thought – ABP felt very different from AITF.

Robot Arm, that would’ve made sense, but no, Edith doesn’t hide the ticket from Archie.

Actually, I believe this exchange was from the episode where Mike and Gloria start to move to California. Edith was hiding a phone message from Mike’s new boss and Archie was trying to prevent Mike from getting the message.

I’m beginning to think that could be it, Two Many Cats, because I had the same instinct – see post #4. I wish I could see it but I don’t have it on tape/disk.

Thanks! If anyone else recognizes this, do please chime in!

Is it okay to bump zombies when they’re my own creation?

I just wanted to triumph in the fact that Two Many Cats and I were right, as I’ve just confirmed after all this time! The episode in question was Mike’s New Job. Also, I found the clip with the hilarious scene! It’s about 2:00 into the scene, but the whole thing is a joy to watch anyway.

So belated thanks to everyone in the thread.

Nice results!

BTW, my sweetie sent me this site, http://anyclip.com/ ; it’s clips of…well, just from movies, I think, but it’s a searchable database, so now when I go ‘Hrm, that one part in that one movie…’, I can just go look it up.

And on the first page, I see a clip titled ‘You’re an animal!’ :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, in the future…maybe we’ll all be in better luck with this kind of thing; too bad it’s not tv shows!
