Does it bug you when Dopers don't post their location?

I was all set to say that my location is easily google-able when I found that like 12 cities in the US alone call themselves the Queen City. Better?

It only bugs me when people are posting in a thread when location is important.

doesn’t bug me in the least - if the poster’s location is relevent to the discussion, most dopers IME when asked will reveal, at the very least what part of what state/province/municipality they are in
It is a privacy issue, especially for those of us who have been victims of one form of identity theft or another

Doesn’t bother me, altho I guess I’d prefer to see the location… No biggie tho. I can appreciate privacy concerns if someone lived in a small town, though. I can say “San Jose” and be one of a million people. If I were in Some Town, Population 120, I’d probably feel differently.

My “real” location changes from day to day; if I just put the country… well, it’s a bigger country than most Americans would think, no I don’t dance flamenco, no I don’t cook paella… and if I list the town, nobody knows where the hell that is.

I’ve been posting from five countries where I didn’t live and from two where I lived but not permanently, posting during a stopover at CDG doesn’t make me any kind of expert on France :stuck_out_tongue:
So if I’m mentioning geographically-relevant info, I mention the geographically-relevant place. And if someone doesn’t list their location in a completely evident way, I don’t care.

I actually put my birthday and physical description into my profile, hoping to get lucky(You better bloody well be reading this Jennifer Anniston) but was told that you get I.D. theft, spammers and hackers as a result so I’ve changed it.

I do think that if you’re offering a comment on say the M.E.you should say what country you’re from and I do so myself where its pertinent to the debate.

I consider myself that most Dopers are a cut above in intelligence and erudition so I totally expect them to pick up on my location, perfidious Albion,as being England, but I’m not going to tell you the place where I live as in Urban.

It doesn’t bother me if people don’t want to reveal their location, except that when they’re mentioning location- or geographical-specific things then it would help to have that context. I’m also not bothered if people know which town I live in although I’ve put my location as the county rather than the city.

Given that “Zarra’s goal against perfidious Albion” must be the most-repeated image in the history of Spanish sports, gee, yeah, Albion sounds familiar.

(Uruguay World Cup, back when the world was in black and white)

Me, too. I’m in Cleveland, Ohio, incidentally, which is what was shown for most of the time I’ve been on the Dope. I only recently decided to try something else.

It used to, but more recently I’ve become annoyed by how fervently the ‘must post actual location’ and ‘Who cares?’ and ‘I value my privacy.’ sides argue these threads.

The item actually listed in the location field has become far less important.

Joke locations and blank locations both irritate the hell out of me. Part of the zen of a message board is interaction with people from all over the world, and you can’t appreciate that when half the people are “in the Zone” or “in another dimension”.

Even here on the Dope, people make assumptions about the intelligence (or at least the education) of people based on their location. I know, I know, you don’t. You’re above all that, but some people do. I choose not to list my location so that I can be judged on the stupidity of my posts, and not the stupidity of my fellow state residents.

Minnesota isn’t nearly as exciting as the Zen Arcade.

You’re doing West Virginia proud.

It doesn’t bug me half as much as knowing somebody is interested in tracking all of us down.

Should I disclose that I am not actually in New Jersey right now and am too lazy to update my location?

Are you telling me that being in Chicago is the same as being in Carbondale?

I don’t know if this has been addressed yet, but you can put any location you lke in the “location” blank. I’ve lived in Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Germany – I could put any of them in the location space and make it believable. Hell, this is the internet! I could say I live in Paris and make it believable. Besides, who really wants to bother looking up Sterling, Colorado – if I had that in my location, would you really know anything about where I live? But when I list County Road 370 North, it creates a picture in your mind – and probably a pretty accurate one – of where I live. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, Colorado or Oklahoma – it sure as hell isn’t Florida or anywhere in Canadia. Listing your location as Carp, Canada, means nothng to me; all I think of is an SCTV skit, and I wonder, “Is that where they filmed ‘Ice Road Truckers’?”

“Location” is where I’m from. On those occasions when geographical location is essential to the thread (“How much is gas where you live?”) I say I live in northeastern Colorado. Otherwise, pinpointing my house on the map is a waste of time (and if you use Google or MapQuest, it’ll be wrong anyway.)

No, the zen of a message board is that they’re all right in front of you. Where their bodies are located is irrelevant.

No, no, no, I’m not from West Viginia. I mean, those stupid, uneducated clods can’t even type!

Mississippi, then. Be sure to vote in the primary!
