The Deadpool trailer was recently leaked out of the San Diego Comic Con. Hardcore fans know that there has been a long, arduous path to the making of this movie. Its an R-rated superhero movie, first of all, its got a character that is sorta niche with comic book fans and even less well known with the public. Past R-rated comic book films like The Punisher have failed miserably, and it stars Ryan Reynolds who was in the universally panned Green Lantern.
Fans are often guilty of thinking their loves are universal, and Fox seems to be taking a big risk to make this movie. My question to non-fans is, after seeing that leaked footage, does it make you want to watch the movie? Does it strike you as something different, something cool? If you didn’t know about the character, would you want to find out more after seeing that?
It still won’t load for me. I’ve tried two browsers and waited thirty minutes…
I wouldn’t call myself a fan of Deadpool, though I do remember him from the very beginnings in New Mutants and X-Factor. I gave up on comics before he got his own. What I remember is a character who wasn’t complete enough to hold up his own movie, which tells me that the movie is either going to be cardboard characters or it’ll incorporate a whole lot of content developed after I stopped reading. Not sure what to expect.
I do like anti-heroes a lot in the comic world. I’m still rooting for Venom to get his own movie. I suppose that makes me something like the target market for a Deadpool movie.
I don’t know how important the R rating is. The Punisher failed because it was a deeply stupid movie that couldn’t decide whether to be Batman or Looney Tunes. It suffered from the same problems that Spawn did, also a flop, also rated R. The rating had nothing to do with it in my opinion.
My concern is that Deadpool will imitate these two. If Deadpool is still “the merc with the mouth” then the attempt at comedy would be even more central, but I have no confidence they can pull it off any better.
Well I adore Deadpool to little bitty pieces but I don’t really know much about him. I don’t know if you’d call me a fan or not. I liked the little bit that was in that terrible Wolverine movie, even if it wasn’t exactly perfect. I think it will be fun, if everyone does it right.
I did not know the character and no, nothing about the trailer was interesting at all.
Plus, wtf were they thinking? Ryan Reynolds is lame as hell: not funny, not tough, not charismatic… why does anyone cast him rather than, say, a piece of wood?
Sooooo maybe, it’s Ryan Reynolds you have the problem with?
I am not a crazy Deadpool fan… but the movie piqued my interest. It is a pretty “hard R” and a little off-putting just because that’s not what I was expecting when they said it would be R rated. I thought violence, blood and a dozen “shits” and maybe a few “fucks.” This is vulgar which the comics are not.
Set photos of Negasonic Teenage Warhead (who is named after the song, so its not like they “stole” it. It’s acknowledged) show her wearing a kind of X-men uniform (dark blue and yellow) so there’s speculation that this does take place in some X-men movie continuity (of which there are several now).
It’s not anything I would go see. It looks like every other action movie that comes from Hollywood. The fact that it’s R rated and aimed at adults just makes it lamer in my opinon.
I didn’t use the word “stole” but even acknowledged it seems weak to me. Think of your own supercool name. Lol. (Is it acknowledged in the comic? The wiki on the character doesn’t say that. In fact, one part says that the author “admitted” that’s where he got it but a citation is needed)
Parts of that have been out for a REALLY long time. Seems like that was going around a couple of years ago. Interesting that they just “revealed” it at Comic Con.
Anyway, I think it looks good. Maybe in a similar vein as Kick Ass. . . Is it still on? Rumors some time ago was that it was dead in the water. Maybe the dismal failure of Kick Ass 2 set the “dark comedy hero” thing back a little.
I don’t particularly want to see it. I really enjoyed the Cable & Deadpool comics, but I think Deadpool works a lot better with Cable as a foil than on his own.
My wife was sort of put off by the “hard R” aspects of the language and content. She didn’t seem terribly impressed, but she sorta liked the parts with TJ Miller.
I’m a comic book guy and a Deadpool fan, so I liked it, though I wasn’t particularly blown away, either.
I haven’t seen the trailer–hadn’t heard about it till just now and can’t find a viewable link. However, just in case it’s relevant, I am not a comic book fan AT ALL. But I’ve caught some Deadpool snippets around the web, and recently bought a digest (the Daniel Way Collection Vol.#1). That was pretty good. So I will probably catch the film at some point.
I don’t know half of what Deadpool is lampooning, but I find his character amusing.
Shoot 'Em Up is a great movie, I love it, I would have loved for it to have sequels, but it was a flop. It only made $26 million worldwide, with a budget of $39 million. So I’m sure the studio is hoping Deadpool does a lot better than that.
Yeah, I’m not a fan, and I haven’t gotten around to watching the trailer yet.
I think the parts of him in the car beating guys up were part of a CGI test footage created with the hopes that it would lead to the movie. It wasn’t really footage that was leaked, someone created and it lead to this movie being made. I guess they kept that in the real movie
