I know this sounds like a really weird question, and I never would have imagined that an employer wouldn’t pay for tissues. But, it came up today.
I’ve had a bit of a runny nose, and have been burning through Kleenex like it’s going out of style. I mentioned it to my boss this morning, and he looked a little confused by the request. Then he suggested that since it’s my nose, maybe I should buy the tissues. We rent office space, and the building owner doesn’t make us pay for toilet paper, even though they’re our asses.
Have you ever heard of an employer not providing tissues??
(No, I’m not going to raise a fuss or anything. I can buy a box of tissues - it’s just not something I’ve encountered before.)
My current office doesn’t provide facial tissue but the last one did. And it wasn’t provided by the janitorial service, but instead by the person who ordered office supplies. You can order a case of 12 or 20 boxes from the office supply vendor.
I have worked in many offices in the last 26 years and have worked in only one where they provided tissues, stocked with the office supplies like Dewey Finn’s office. I have allergies and a perpetual runny nose and have been bringing my own box of tissues with me since I was in the first grade. There might have been another one or two that put a box in the restrooms.
But in my experience tissues are not an entitlement.
Yes, my employer pays for tissues. They also pay for toilet paper, since we rent the entire building. It might be a good idea to provide tissues beacuse it might reduce sicktime be making the workplace more sanitary. It may also be good customer service.
I’m not sure I’d expect this from an employer though. It’s somewhere between toilet paper and tampons.
No. They do not provide tissue. Actually, they weren’t providing ANYTHING other than TP for awhile when the jackbooted thugs that are purchasing started getting a little too full of themselves - but now we can finally get wipes at least again (for cleaning monitors and such). Idiots. In any event, it doesn’t really matter - I just grab a big old handful of napkins from the cafeteria and use those.
I’ve never heard of a company providing tissues. There are, of course, wall-mounted dispensers in some of the offices I’ve worked in (in the bathroom), but no one has ever provided boxes of tissues for the employees to put on their desks. Nor would I ever expect it.
I’ve never heard of an office giving out tissues either; maybe mine does but I’ve honestly never thought about it or looked for them (I carry my own). Doesn’t seem like it would matter, except during flu season but then again most people carry their own kleenex around then anyway. There is a dispenser in the bathroom but the kleenex in there are scratchy, more for hands than noses.
The job I had over the summer had a Purell dispenser in the room, though, which I thought was a little weird.
My employer provides Kleenex. I usually keep a box of tissue out of the supply closet here at my desk, unless I have a cold or it’s allergy season. Then I bring in a box of my own lotioned tissue for my pampered nostrils.
My employer provides lots of comforts around the office. Coffees, teas, cocoa, spring water, 5 or 6 different varieties of Lipton cup a soups, tampons, sanitary pads, tissues, and a few other items.
Never, except for the last place I worked, and those were for the nurse’s office. She’d share boxes with us, but they were thin and scratchy, so we usually bought our own.
We have a germophobe where I work now, and the women’s restrooms are equipped with alcohol wipes for cleaning the toilet seats.
Actually, in Jax, they did buy the big tissue-like wipes - they were almost as big as dishtowels, and I think they were supposed to be used to clean monitors and such, but people used them as napkins and placemets when they had lunch.
I just bring my own. It’s easier than always wearing long sleeves.
They are provided for us at my office, along with the toilet paper and paper towels. There’s free coffee too, but I don’t drink that. I think it’s a nice perk, but I certainly wouldn’t expect it.
I teach in a public school, and we don’t get jack! I provide tissue for all my little snot-nosed heathens, usually funded by sales of bottled water.
(Side story: About 4 years ago, I offered 10 points of extra credit to any kid who brought in a box of tissue. I got enough to last until last semester, and not one kid did the math and figured out that 10 extra points wouldn’t do a thing in a semester that had over 1000 points possible!)
My company didn’t even let us order calenders last year. We had to buy our own. We buy tissues, napkins, plates, cups, coffee, coffee makers, etc. on our own. It’s like pulling teeth to get office supplies like pens, post-it’s, paper clips, or rubber bands. I had a manager ask us once why we couldn’t reuse the rubber bands and paper clips we already had.
[sarcasm]We need to cut costs so we can continue to pay the executives multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses. Oooh, don’t forget to keep cutting that headcount.[/sarcasm]
I once worked for a place that supplied tampons. And toilet paper, and tissues. The fridge was stocked with sodas, and there was things like cup-a-soups and small snacks as well.
That place was by far the exception, though. In my experience, most places stop at toilet paper.
My office certainly provides tissues - it’s a counseling center and people come to cry. I am expected to have tissues in each office and, in fact, I have to order some. I order 12 boxes at a time, usually. I guess there are some offices on campus that don’t, but it’s a tool of the trade for us.
