I guess I never looked up the definition, but I never thought of ‘jerk’ as related to intelligence. I associated it with self-centered, rude behavior. More like a sociopath who can’t actually work up the guts to assault or kill those who annoy him.

Well, after this entire thread, this seems like a bit of a nitpick, but since you mentioned it. . .
Either you showed up unexpectedly and they’re talking behind your back or you showed up expectedly and they’re talking smack right in front of you. Those are your only two choices. If, as you say, it’s a scheduled chat and they were expecting you, they weren’t “talking behind your back”, they were talking badly right in front of you, and your title is no longer valid.
But I agree with the others. This is not about them. This is about you. Either you face them directly and deal with the issues or stop hanging out with them. Complaining about them in a Pit thread is not only ineffective, it’s not flattering. . . to you.
