Eh, I don’t know too many interesting people in real life, so I post here. Where else can I post my random musings on waking up after 19 years in a coma, or meet up with people to play Star Wars Galaxies, or discuss movies and books, or plan a Dopefest…etc?
I work for a newly purchased company that hasn’t done one shred of business for a year. So my job is to LOOK busy and stay out of my bosses hair. So I keep The Straight Dope up on my computer and check it every hour to entertain myself. SOme of the stuff that gets posted is very entertaining!
I’m with slotar and subsequent posters who spend too much time sitting and waiting.
One of the great things about the SDMB is speed – or lack thereof. I keep SDMB open and, if a conference call shifts to something outside my area or I’m waiting for a build, I can use that break time to look at a page. When I’m done, I click the “next page” or “next thread” or “submit” button. 20 minutes later, I check back – either it’s all new page or an error message!
Seriously, sometimes it’s helpful to have a poky site in the background. And sometimes I attempt to post something worthwhile… and give up. And then take the next chance to post and just post lamely.
Wait Pee wee, you seem to forget the fact that until I marry rich or win the lottery unfortunately I have to spend a few hours at this dull job getting paid for doing next to nothing sitting in front of this computer. Sure, I’d love to be dong more meaningful things but I think boss would notice if I were to move my desk outside and started working on my tan. I have taken on line classes before - that is actually how I got my Masters degree and I did learn two additional languages partially by practicing while at work.
I am curious though, you say “you are sure you know what you are talking about before you speak” and then come out with your opinions about what others should do with their lives…it makes…you sound like just another whiner in the pit that you seem to find so distasteful. But then…that is only my opinion from some one in a boring job who should find something more meaningful to do with my life than waste my time making a salary in the top 75% of my peers while doing this silly assed shit. I get paid the same no matter what I do - so what is the difference?
Yes. Watching TV. Working. Drinking excessively. Hanging with the homies. Playing videgames. Used to ski and golf until I sold my car and got trapped in NYC. Going to the gym. Making sweet love to my non-SDMB girlfriend.
30
Yes. As you may have guessed, one that sits me in front of a PC all day.

Yup.
Where else can I share every inane thought I have?
I am neither a Nurse nor a Carmen.
It’s a long story.
Hey, I’m not only in a job where I sit at a computer most of the day, I also am IN CHARGE and have to make decisions that affect personnel, large amounts of money and significant chunks of real estate! Yet I spend an inordinate amount of time cruising these boards whilst banking embarrassing amounts of money!
…bwa-hahahahahahahahahaha! Ohchristbutihatemylife…
Phlosphr, I see just from the above link what is wrong with your boat. It’s missing it’s mast and sails.
Chefguy, I share your guilt (there was guilt in there, wasn’t there? ) – but you have to look at it this way: we do our jobs so efficiently, 20 times faster than the average person - enabling us to freely roam about the SDMB on a constant basis.
That’s my rationalization, and you can’t take it away from me…
Are you doing anything else besides eating, sleeping and SDMB’ing???
Yes, I have a very full life, thank you.
How old are you?
40
Do you have a job?
Self employed
A significant other?
Was breaking up with my last ex when I found The Dope. Didn’t date most of last winter. Currently dating a wonderful woman, but not in an SO relationship yet. Sure, she’s my Squeeze, but I’m sort of gun shy, ya know?
I use the internet in the same ways that most people use newspapers and TV. I read my news pages while having my morning coffee. I play games, read, search for interesting things, and IM in the evenings. If I’m doing home office stuff or sick, I’m online almost all day.
Whatever I’m doing online, I have a window open for The Dope, plus the e-mail notifications.
There have been times when I’ve been out of town for work or vacation for a week or two (or more) at a time. Zero posts while I’m gone.
Then, there’s been times I post 40 to 50 posts a night. Many of the Trek Doper threads are like a conversation. :dubious: That makes posts add up.
Plus, there are a lot of things I’m interested in and I usually find something to say about it.
I am a geek, too. Sure… an outdoorsy, big, redneck, construction worker, Texas boy… but a geek nonetheless ;j
Currently I have no great demands upon my time and I am enjoying it. I like to scan threads and sometimes respond.
I am addicted in a way. There are a number of chores I could be doing. I need to repot a plant and cut my grass. I should go to the grocer. I am out of Diet Coke! Still, I sit.
Hey, it’s summer.
I spend a lot of time on the SDMB, bit I don’t really post that often. I’ve been posting a lot lately because
a) It’s summer, so I have no school
b) I don’t, in the typical sense, have a job. I answer the phone at a restaurant 2 nights a week for 3 hours at a time.
c) The job that I do occasionally work at is a computer job.
There’s also the d) answer, which is this:
d) During the school year, my free time is spent in the computer lab. And praise the lord, they have yet to find out and block The Straight Dope.
I used to be addicted. But not any more.
Really.
No, really.
I am NOT in denial.
Am NOT.
In denial.
<-Looks at Reg date.
<-Looks at post count.
my answers:
I have a life. It includes reading/posting on this board. I read MUCH more than my post count indicates.
Employed.
Divorced soon.
Life. Full time job (which involves sitting in front of a computer and waiting, or thinking, or teleconferencing). Two children. Husband. 37 years old. I also read a hell of a lot.
I have an amazing amount of free time on my hands, even during the school year when I should be working and not procrastinating.
In fact, I would have over 10,000 posts if I posted every single time I typed a response. But usually by the time I type it, I figure “Eh, this is not adding to the conversation in any sort of productive way” and I hit th back button and move on…
As someone else mentioned…
I’m the boss. I have my staff trained up so that I need only intervene in emergencies or unique situations.
Therefore, while I have 5500 posts I’ve posted more than 60% of those since last November.
It’s not a bad life. And my Executive VP has the same attitude. He plays Diablo all day.
I post so much (3.39 per day) because there is just SO much ignorance to be fought, it takes effort and time, and yes, POSTS! I do it for you guys. Don’t go changin’.
I work in the very next cubicle as mipiace, we have the same job, do the same things and basically screw-off the same way. I do the work when it comes but in the interim, i use the SDMB as a means to actually look busy when we actually arent. Its a way not to get laid off. That may be shamelessly leeching off my bosses but I gotta pay the mortgage.
WOOT!! 1497 Posts since Dec 2002!! Sweet!!
