Geneb and I are now a part of this [del]wonderful[/del] traffically challenged community! … And there is a Dogfish Head Alehouse within driving distance.
Was thinking, some Thursday or Saturday night, it might be nice to have a little get-together there.
Since I’m on the far side of the area (near the shores of the Chesapeake Bay), a weeknight is pretty much out of the question. But I’d try to make it if it’s on a Saturday, just so there’s at least one person there besides the OP who’s escaped SW VA.
I’ll be driving through VA on the Saturdays of November 23rd and 30th so if it’s held then I might be able to attend. (My goal is New York and/or Florida but it turns out I’m going to have more free time going up than I thought I would so I can take my time.)
I personally wouldn’t be able to make earlier than 3-something. Ideal time for me would be 5:30 or 6 so I would be able to get settled in at a hotel if I leave early enough.
Funny thing, I’m actually sitting in my car in that shopping center, at the 5 below, while my wife gets some presents for my daughter’s friend’s birthday party today.
Side note: On the 30th, seriously consider going west of the DC area. If you’re doing NY to Florida, I-81 (well west of the area) is an acceptable alternative. I hear horror stories of the trucks dominating the highway (the handful of times I’ve done that drive it hasn’t been an issue), but those can’t compare to the horror of 95 anywhere within 200 miles of DC in either direction on Thanksgiving weekend.
The first time we drove to Florida for spring break, I said “we’re driving 6 hours today. Whether that gets us to Fayetteville, or Lorton, we’re stopping after 6 hours”. Lorton is 10 miles from my house, so that was a bit of an exaggeration, but I have had it take 3+ hours to go the 90 miles to Richmond.
Another alternative would be to take US 301, which goes east of the area, but that still would require you to go through the New Jersey part of things (I think), and links up with 95 at Fredericksburg (about halfway between Richmond and DC). The stretch of 95 between Richmond and and F’burg can be pretty bad as well, so I don’t know that I’d go that way.
If you’re stopping partway, Fayetteville (NC) and Florence (SC) are both fairly large places with lots of motel choices. We’ve done both (Florence is not quite halfway from our place to the Palm Beach area).
Unfortunately we’re planning to be out of the area for Thanksgiving, but otherwise I would be there! Hopefully this won’t be the first Fairfax Dopefest, though.
I’d love to participate, but I’m not around much for the rest of 2013. Work travel + vacation time means I’m paying an awful lot for an empty apartment.
