Doper Diplomacy - Winter-Spring 2003

Hey, WL, if there’s going to be all sorts of nasty white press, can you put me on the distribution.

JC: have you been reading Maurice Sendak to your daughter at bedtime again?

I’ve read the email to all of us, and I’d like to toss in my two cents, if I could.

First of all, I’ve gone through all of the emails I’ve received from other players, and it looks like all of them are genuine. :dubious:

Secondly, my address is bibliophage@hotmail.com. If you get an email claiming to be from Russia, but the address doesn’t match the one I’ve just given, then it ain’t from me.

Finally, I vote that we keep playing. Now that the offender has been smoked out, he/she isn’t likely to try it again. Plus the game hasn’t even really begun yet. We haven’t even given our first set of orders, so I don’t think it’s been damaged beyond repair. I 'm certainly having a lot of fun here, and it would be a shame to quit before we even got started.

How do the rest of you feel? Shall we keep going?

The offender ain’t been smoked out yet.

I have no idea who the offender is. I was just riffing off the previous emails.

Dammit. It better not be a regular.

If he’s not regular, maybe that’s why he’s so grumpy.

WL- ‘jeepers’? When did you turn 70 years old?

Well as I posted in my round table e-mail, I have no real idea what is going on. Without more information, how can any of us make an educated decision as to what to do? How do I know how much the game’s been compromised?

I know that I haven’t sent out any impersonating e-mail, but since no one’s come clean, now I’m beginning to worry that I sent out an e-mail in 1099, when it should have been in sent in Minime (England) or the World Tourney (Russia). I don’t think I’ve done this, and if I had, it wouldn’t make any sense anyway.

Are we supposed to be actively engaging in Dip in 1099 or is it shutdown until a decision has ben made? Quite frankly, I’m leery of discussing the game with anyone except those with whom I’ve had dealings before, but that doesn’t seem fair to all the other newcomers, and it seems to tilt the game unnaturally.

And thus we see the chaos.

And out of chaos rises a new nation to rule you all.

Victory to the Welsh!

Don’t worry, it was definitely an impersonating e-mail, not a mistaken message to the wrong game.

I vote we continue with the game. I doubt that it will happen again now that I’ve made such a fuss about it.

Dog-bowl chaos.

I confess. I’ve been living a lie.

I told all of you that I am France. Well, I’ve been fooling all of you, especially White Lightning.

I’m really playing all of the non-territory islands. . . Ireland, Iceland, Sicily, etc.

I feel so dirty.

I think White Lightning wants the perp to 'fess up, at least to him, if not publicly. I don’t know what will happen if he doesn’t.

Seeth Seeth

JC: You had the most negative reaction of all the people who broadcast; if the person "'fess "'s up to our GM and promises to not do it again, can we continue playing? The action didn’t hurt you any; hell, it didn’t even hurt me any and I was the one it was directed to.

Eh? Whazzat?

Never seen someone seethe?

Forseeth, forseeth! Methinks yon noble lord dost angereth muchly.

And bury the bastards in our Turkish dead!

Precisely. I don’t quite know what will happen if he doesn’t, either.

I had hoped to keep it somewhat off the boards, but oh well.

The situation is that some person (or persons) wrote more than one email posing as another player – going so far as to create an email account that looked similar to that of the player being impersonated.

Look – my position is no harm, no foul. It wasn’t very clever, it certainly was borderline unethical, but I’m more than willing to chalk it up to a simple misunderstanding and move on. IF the offender comes clean, so that we can clear up the miscommunication and establish the ground rules. Absent that, well… I don’t know. I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that.

ppg_shg, you’re certainly free as far as I’m concerned to communicate amongst yourselves to whatever extent you feel comfortable with. All I’m saying is that I as the GM won’t proceed until we get this matter cleared up.

And, in case I didn’t make this clear, there will be no recriminations, no punishment, nothing of the sort. As far as I’m concerned. Just let me know, privately if desired, that it was you who made the mistake, and we can move ahead with the game and with our lives.

I feel that the players are entitled to know–who received the email (I gather Austria), from whom it was sent, who was being impersonated, what the fake email address is, and what was said.

Hell for all I know I could be communicating with the fake as well. I know at least one person set up a separate account from the usual account.

Yeah, I’d be halfway tempted to restart.

How do you re-establish trust in the communications?
