Doper Diplomacy - Winter-Spring 2003

I would be happy to restart as well. Perhaps even with different countries.
As long as I’m not Italy.

When I sent that email as Germany promising cooperation if you’d occupy Mun, Ber and Kie?

Umm…
That was false.

hangs head

I’s sowwy.

I think a restart and a shuffle is in order, and I’m not just saying that b/c I’m Italy. I can live with Italy.

However, how do I know that some message I got from France or Turkey about what they wanted to do or what they heard wasn’t based on a message from the imposter, or based on information that they got from Austria which had been misled by the imposter, or based on information that they got from Austria after he deduced there was an imposter but then incorrectly assumed who it was.

Dogs and cats living together. It’s bad juju.

We know.

And surely he knows we know.

But when he knew, but we didn’t know, and he knew we didn’t know, he might not know that some knew and some didn’t know, but he didn’t know who knew and who didn’t know.

Ya know?

I’ll be any country as well. We might want to line up a replacement for The Mole[sub]tm[/sub], though.

Two plans. Neither sound like much fun.

  1. I establish a short list of acceptable email addresses. None of this “alternate email” stuff. Each player sends me, from a home address that I identify uniquely with that player, a list of not more than 2 acceptable email addresses for that player. I send this list to the players. Any emails from any address not on the list is treated as illegitimate and disregarded.

  2. All emails get vetted through me. We’d be moving full-on to a “press” kind of game. In this case we might want to move the game to an automatic adjudication Judge online that already has an infrastructure set up to accomodate passwords and anonymous press.

Typically that kind of game does require anonymity. Which of course takes all the fun out of playing it on the board.

ppg_shg: So far I’ve seen copies of two emails, both sent by someone posing as France. One was sent to Germany, and one was sent to Austria. It wasn’t an alternate account, but one that was set up to look similar to Abe Babe’s email account and tried to pass itself off as being from him.

What say you just spank the perpetrator, we lash him a few times, then reshuffle the countries and move on?

It’s not like we’d played S01 yet.

And I’m really sorry this happened to your first game, Lightnin’.

Man, I thought the Case of the Missing Orders was tough in Mini-Me.

I think all we can really do without losing SDMB flavor of the game is start again and pay close attention to the source of the emails you receive.

Austria c&P’ed the fake email in his response to me, so that’s the only way I knew.

You know, apparently I got a couple phony emails and hadn’t even noticed it.

Here’s one possible idea thats slowing the resolution, perhaps someone sent that email from outside the game just to be a pain in the ass.

As far as a solution, I think restarting the game with different countries would be fine. Everyone agrees to use one email account for this game and in order to switch it must be confirmed by the GM.

Could someone help me out and define what exactly these different types of press are? I know its been posted before somewhere, but its not in any of the currect threads. Gracias.

Omni, I thought of that (outsider sending the faux emails) too. But the address that the false one was modeled after was one that’s not available on the boards, and I didn’t post the email address list to the boards, so we’re definitely dealing with a player.

White press: fully attributed.
Gray press: Anonymous attribution
Black press: specific attribution, true or false.

The latter two are controlled by a third party. For example.
Press from Italy to Austria, attributed to Italy: white.
Press from anonymous to Austria, no attribution: gray.
Press written by Germany, sent to Austria, attributed to Italy: Black.

I believe in full black-press games you can even lie about who the message is going to as well. Like as France I could have press sent to Italy that read “From Germany, to Italy and Austria, let’s be friends.” But it would be from me and just go to Italy.

It gets confusing. I would imagine. I’ve never played a game like that myself.
I’m personally fine with shuffling Powers and starting over. Is that acceptable even if we don’t discover who did it in the first place? I agree with JC that if they come forward (and I don’t have to tell anybody who it was, just that they’ve come forward), letting them know it was inappropriate and moving forward would be fine.

I’m fine with the method proposed by Omni. One account (maybe two, if absolutely necessary) per player, confirmed by me. Again, though, waiting to see if anyone steps forward. I’m hoping I’ll have an email to that effect waiting for me when I get home.

It’d have to be two for me. No way around it. But I’m game.

It sucks to be put in this position.

Here’s hoping someone out there feels really damn stupid.

Another vote here for shuffling and re-starting. Pain in the ass, but it’s better than quitting. I was really looking forward to playing Russia. Damn shame.
Will we have to provide country preferences again ?

I’ll mail in new country preferences, substantially different from the first.

Random picks by the GM’s sadistic cat would be fine too.

So where do we stand? We have 4 votes for a shuffle (me included).

I’d prefer to continue without the reshuffling, but I’ll go along with whatever the group decides.

I’ll send in my new preferences just in case.

P.S. Whoever did this should just fess up. I have it narrowed down to only two possibilities anyways.

This sucks. I’m against starting over and reshuffling, but I don’t see much option. I’ve been dipping like mad, and it looked like it was going to be an interesting game.

Abe, have you used that e-mail in past games? Even if it hsn’t been posted to the board, an ex-enemy could be screwing with us. It’s the only option I see, unless one of the players who said ‘It wasn’t me’ is lying. If someone is lying, I doubt they’re going to come clean now.

Lets set a deadline, agree on an action, and if it’s to start over, have a much shorter initial period. I’d like to get started.

If anyone wants to see the e-mails, e-mail me.

Ben/Austria/Wikkit

I have two email accounts I use for general ‘game stuff’. Abebabe60091 was the initial one, based on my username. I started using t _homasd when I got into a second game. Both are at yahoo.com. I find it easier to keep things straight, especially when players are in both games. I have never used any account for the games, except ‘very’ early on.

I am using the t_homasd account for this game, but it’s possible that you might get an email or two from the other one.

If a mail from an unfamiliar account comes, I’d just forward it to the main account that the players is using. He would recognize it as not being his letter. If it is his letter, he can reply without having to spend time back and forth with, “Is a letter from XXX@aol.com from you?” “Yes” “OK, here’s my response”

Even though I suspect Germany and England are going to gang up on me, I’d be happy with keeping our country picks too. If there’s a vote, I have no preference.

I don’t know if I’m as mad as Nate, just disappointed. Nevertheless, I cast one solid vote for a shuffle. I’ll even put my first country preference down as Italy.

If the group decides that it wants the game to continue, then it should continue, but I would like to withdraw at that point.

There’s a substantial penalty for early withdrawal.

And it’s not effective as a method of birth control.

Looks like shuffle and start over has the majority, so can we do that and have our first deadline by Monday or Tuesday?
