Wow. I am in awe of your keen grasp of the purpose of the Pit. You’ll note this thread is not about kiz’s predicament itself, nor do I have anything to say on that subject here.

My problem was with the nasty, judgmental attitude displayed by some posters. Here’s an analogy: I go into one of the “Ask the Gay Guy!” threads and start railing against “faggots” who will “burn in hell” for their “unholy sins against God and nature.” Obviously, nobody would stand for this kind of attitude. I thought what some people said to kiz deserved the same reaction. Disagree with that all you like.
I give Goo points for taking this thread seriously and seeing what I was getting at.
Well, perhaps I was just profoundly “unresourceful” but when I moved here my company paid for a relocation company to help me find a place in Boston Metro area. We had five places to look at, and appointements made, at 8AM. At 9 AM two of them were cancelled because the apartments were taken. I filled out a rental application at one, and a third appointment was cancelled. I went the the last of the five and filled out an application.
The choice was: take this last place now for $800/mo (studio, and cramped, too) which is a sure thing, or hope to god I get the other place.
There was nothing left. Sure, you can find all kinds of ads for apartments, right up until you call to enquire, at which time they are gone. I am paranoid about moving out because I am not in a position to put down two to three months’ rent up front to get a place, and yet this tiny friggin’ place is killing me.
But roommates I don’t know was never an option. I would rather live in my car than reside with people I don’t know. If I wanted to share a bathroom with a stranger there would be slightly more than zero options available.
But, again, maybe I’m not as resourceful as gobear would be, were he in my shoes.
Oh, and I wouldn’t have gotten the other place, as it turns out. And when I said I’d take the one I currently lived at the rental agent had to call other appointments he had for the place to cancel.
Just goes to show you that sometimes the more intelligent people are the biggest dicks.
With as much as I agree that soft coating everything is stupid, and taking “a dose of reality” is a good thing, I think the attitude above is too condensending and assholic. What reality are we talking about here? That it is ok to be condensending and to toss insults down from the heavens where your nose is sticking in the almighty’s ass? Or that a nice civilized discourse is impossible from one so obviously well learned about the harshness of life, and who has all the answers.

erislover, your story only proves gobear’s point. In only 5 tries, you found an affordable apartment in Boston. Kiz’s statement that finding a place is impossible if you don’t make $100K was an excuse, not reality. She can move out if she wants, if it is important enough to her.
With respect to the ‘dose of reality’ issue. Sometimes you have to look a friend in the eye and say ‘you’re being an idiot.’ A personal story, of much less significance:
A little while back, I tried out a different way of styling my hair. I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not, but was willing to give it a try, maybe it would grow on me. When asking my friends if they liked it, they all said yes, except one. He said “Your hair looks like crap.” Suffice to say, once I changed it back, all my other friends said “I didn’t really like it, but I thought you did.” Only one guy looked me in the eye and said what he really thought, no hedging, no soft words, just the truth.
The truth is that her monetary excuse for not moving out was not reality, someone had to tell her.
