That’s right, I’m DR-based but come from Gibraltar (somehow my location manages to refer to both these places).
RL friend Mighty_Girl, who introduced me to the SDMB several years ago, is Dominican, and RedFury is Spanish but DR-based. Another poster recently mentioned being Dominican or living in the DR, but his name escapes me right now.
I’ve noticed several other Latin American or Latin American-based posters, like Colibrí in Panama, some in/from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Venezuela (Sapo) and Colombia, as well as Ale from Uruguay who is now in Thailand.
I’m a US expat, but since I’ve lived in Panama nearly 17 years now, and will been working in the country for 30 years come March 16, my friends tell me I’m casi panameño. I’m not sure that’s such a good thing, especially with respect to my driving habits.
I’ve been maintaining a somewhat haphazard list (using the Zeldarizer when I see a new candidate while reading a thread), but haven’t made the effort to format my data and update Zeldar’s thread. We’re definitely over 500 non-USA-based Dopers, however, even accounting for the fact that some Dopers from the earlier have left the SDMB or moved back to the USA. [Most of the non-USA-based Dopers are in anglophone countries, of course, but the posts linked to above are sorted by country.]
If anyone’s interested, I could probably update the lists in that thread. My best guess is that there are currently about 50 Dopers in non-Anglophone countries, with a dozen or so more in Quebec.
[In answer to posts upthread: 1) the current Moscow Dopers are Timchik and Surok; 2) there appear to be 7 Dopers in France, now that Angua’s crossed the Channel.]
Hmm… looks like I messed up some of the numbers in my post #27 above, together with the most important link.
This should link to last August’s list with 47 in mainland Europe (non-UK etc), 25 in Asia & Middle East, 16 in Latin America & Caribbean, and 6 in Africa (although 5 of those are in South Africa, where English is one of the official languages).
So, with arrivals and departures since last August, I’d guess just short of 100 Dopers in non-anglophone countries (plus the dozen or so in Quebec).
Tja…ask the guy who gave himself the name of your outdated currency. I might as well have named myself Ishtar.
I know we have/had a Doper from Iceland and there are some from China…but I have always wondered why there are so few (if any?) from South America - I mean, come on - no Dopers from Argentina or Brazil or Venezuela?
Close enough - the way I like to think of it, I was born in Israel and I moved here when I was 6 years old.
See, I was born in Israel to American immigrants, who took me back to the States with them when I was an infant. We came back when I was six, and except for two years in New York in my late 20’s, I’ve lived here ever since. I consider myself as an Israeli (of American heritage), I’m a U.S. citizen, and I grew up in an English-speaking household.
Charlie Tan (changed from another name, as I recall, but I don’t recall what), is from Skane – i.e., the southern tip of Sweden that was Danish for centuries, and still has its own unique culture – “Swedish but…” the way a Texan, Alaskan, or Hawaiian will strongly emphasize his/her own Americanness but also point out the differences from “whitebread heartland American.”
