Dopers Unite! Urgent Request for HELP!

(I asked for and received permission from SkipMagic before posting this)

Dear Dopers,

I lead a group of people several times a year on a trip to a barrio outside of San Jose, Costa Rica called Pavas. There, we partner with a small church to serve the impoverished children there. The church’s name, Iglesia de Pesebre (Church of the Manger) is apt because its primary mission is providing food daily to around 100 orphaned or virtually orphaned children there. By virtually orphaned we mean that their fathers are absent and their mothers are prostitutes, drug addicts or both.

We recently partnered with them to transform their tin shack into a concrete structure that is safe and secure. Kids come to the church every day for beans, rice, and love.

One of the scourges of the community is child prostitution. For a hungry 9 year old girl who is responsible for her 3 year old brother, selling her body (and soul) is one of the few real options for her. Every day Iglesia de Pesebre fends off hunger for one of these beautiful children, is a day she doesn’t have to make that choice.

When we go back in two weeks, we will be working in the food program, improving local homes, going on a retreat with the elderly, and running a medical program. Part of the program is helping local families establish their own medicine cabinet.

Here is where we need your help:

One of our suppliers just backed out. We are short 100 thermometers and 100 tubes of first aid ointment (think Neosporin or the generic equivalent).

I know you guys have contacts. I also know you are socially conscious. If you feel moved to purchase a thermometer and a tube of first aid ointment, you can send it to:

Walnut Grove Church
7046 Cold Harbor Road
Mechanicsville, VA 23111
If you have questions you can email me at wgbccap@yahoo.com .

If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, include your name and address. I WILL NOT SEE THE PACKAGES OR YOUR INFORMATION!

The church website is http://www.walnutgrovebaptist.com/ .

Pics of past trip can be found at HERE .

If you feel led to donate, please do so quickly, as we depart in less than two weeks.

Thank you.

Peace,

Jayson

AKA Newcrasher

One of each sent via walgreens.com. Good luck.

Two of each sent as well- great idea about walgreens.com, phouka- and nice to “see” you!

Debbie

Four of each on the way from drugstore.com. Should be there around the fourth.

one of each via drugstore.com, 5-day shipping

Sent two of each from Drugstore.com. Should arrive in 4-7 days.

Sure.

One of each, from Walgreens. I wish I could do more.

Five of each on the way from Amazon. Not sure what kind of thermometers you wanted, Amazon has some digitals for $1.99.

Based on my experience with how generous dopers can be when the the chips go down for someone, may I suggest you ask people to let you know just how many of each they are sending.
Otherwise your church might wind up with a lifetime supply of first aid cream and thermometers.

I’ve looked through the thermometers several times and can’t find anything for that price. Can you PM a link to me?

I did a search on Amazon…here’s their $1.99 digital thermometers

Although, I dunno…is a digital thermometer something you want to buy “on the cheap”? Newcrasher might want to inform us as to what the organization wants exactly.

Five of each from Walgreens. Good luck!

ZipperJJ found the ones that I bought. I was going to buy the old fashioned oral (mercury) thermometer, but I could not find one at Amazon.
Walgreen.com would not let me ship to the church (kept telling me invalid first name) Drugstore.com was more expensive on the first aid cream. So I was back to Amazon.
::: Shrug:::
If the thermometer linked above is not the type you are looking for, newcrasher let us know exactly what you are looking for, and I will source some of those.

Wow! Just wow!

I wake up and check this thread to see if it has even been READ yet, and your response is overwhelming!

Regarding the quality of the thermometers…ANY will do! From our perspective we may want to compare features and choose just the right one for our family…

…but they probably have never owned a thermometer in their life. They will appreciate any that you choose, no matter how inexpensive.

Peace.

Jayson

A check for $50.00 is in the mail. You might be able to get a little better deal if you buy a bunch of them.

I think this type became illegal after they found out my brother and I were breaking dozens of them to play with the mercury. Damn it. I ruined the fun for all those kids in San Jose!

Feckin’ Walgreens. Asked far too many difficult questions!

I don’t live in the USA, which is making it hard to order stuff.

Is there a paypal account to which donations can be sent?

I managed to get an order through from drugstore.com which was much easier than using Walgreens. The website says it’s gone through, so I’m assuming it’s ok.

As we found out from the last donations thread, PayPal charge for the currency conversion if you make a donation overseas.

Two of each are coming from Walgreens.com.

I think I’ll e-mail customer service to see if there’s some way they can bundle all these shipments together into one or two big ones to save on the labor of having to open a lot of little packages.
