Oh, I get it just fine. I laughed like hell at a few of his jokes, and I’m stealing the one about tent zippers for the next Yo Mama fight, should the eighties ever return. My impression of him as a comedian: pretty funny. My impression of him as a person: kind of a piece of shit.

I brought this to the pit because I wanted to share the video. I’m not attacking his freedom of speech, I’m not crying that there are more important things to do, I’m not making any great statement on the contribution of shock comedy to society as a whole. I figured other folks might want to be more vitriolic, thus here we are, in the pit. Clearly, I hate America.

Ever heard of a stage persona? I imagine that Doug Stanhope has one. In any case, if you’re laughing at his jokes (not to mention giving him free publicity) and then calling him a piece of shit, well, I think you’re complicit and in no position to judge. But really, I think it’s ridiculous to think you can know anything about who he is as a person based on his stage act.

Yes. Comedy does not offend me. If I don’t find a comedian funny, I avoid him. But raunchy, shocking, or tasteless comedy? Doesn’t bother me. Dice had his funny moments but he wasn’t a favorite. Neither is Stanhope, but he’s all right.
Comedy need not contain actual humor, only the attitude of humor. An industry has been built on this principle; Stanhope is a product of it.
This, however, is pretty good, not because of the byplay or basic concept, but his use of imagery. “I grab you by the eggbag and twist…You yelp like a dog under a car tire.”
It also benefits from not hearing his voice, which is like piss on a concrete floor.
I got to see Stanhope on Sunday in DC. He was funnier than fuck.
And if you think that clip is offensive, you really should have heard the shit he said about his own mother, who died the weekend before last. And who he loved very much.

IMO content can make up for delivery and delivery can make up for content, sure, but I find him lacking in both. I don’t follow politics much at all, but I find Palin annoying…and I still don’t think he’s funny.
That said, whatever floats your boat. He strikes me as a wannabe. Following Kimmel and Carolla on “The Man Show,” nah. His “Girls Gone Wild” stuff (I only saw the ad clips…maybe the DVDs are hilarious), nah.
