Downtown Albany and the Bronx Zoo - an Educational MMP

Finally up and about, although I’ve been awake on and off since 5 or so. It was the combination of a weird dream and a full bladder that compelled me to get up. That and knowing that Bernie needed to go out if I was to avoid cleaning the carpet…

It’s again 35 USA Degrees - decidedly brisk, especially when one ventures forth in a robe and slippers. Probably time to put the storm windows back in the storm doors, and raise the screens/drop the windows everywhere else (already done in the bathroom) I think the nice, mild, open-the-house days are over till spring.

About that dream - the gist of it involved a woman with neon green hair (I think that subconsciously marked her as a whacko) who came over to complain to us. Among her issues:

  • we were outside but our basement lights were on
  • something about a swingset in our back yard (FTR, we don’t have a swingset back there)
  • complaints about workmen coming in and out all day, and she didn’t know who they were
  • bitching about where we stored things
In the dream, I became aware that she was wearing a “Beautify Our Neighborhood” T-shirt and I suddenly knew that she was bound and determined to establish a neighborhood association. That’s when I became livid. I told her it was none of her business who we hired to do work on our house. I pointed out that we bought our place specifically because there was no association. I dared her to show me the complaints she supposedly lodged with the sheriff. Then I asked her where she lived, and she said she lived on the second floor of some nearby house. She didn’t even own property herself!!!

Then I went into the house to make sure everything was double-locked because she and the freaky little blond girl with her kept trying to get inside. We’ve got a double front door, and I was locking the two together when the one on the right swung free - all of the hinge pins had been removed! That’s when I woke up - I was soooooooo pissed off!!

I have no idea where that dream came from. Especially the part about the workmen - we’ve done all our remodeling ourselves. The only things we’ve had done in the last 2 years were carpet installation and replacement of the furnace and air conditioner.

So anyway, I’m up. And I’m sitting here with Miss Brandy in her new favorite place - when I lean forward to type, she crawls behind me and snuggles down between my back and the chair back, with her paws on the left arm of the chair, so she can survey the room. I gotta get **FCD ** to take a pic of this - it’s got to be a hoot! But he’s still sleeping, so it’ll wait till later.

Plans for today: Finish laundry. Buy some groceries. Play in clay. **FCD ** is going back to the boat to play there. And so will our weekend end.

I’m thinking I should wake him and make him take me to breakfast…

I’ve been up for a while, but not really motivated to do much. Got lots to do today: work stuff, garden stuff, pumpkin stuff. Decided not to go to church this morning because the Columbus Marathon is this morning and will make a mess of traffic. So I’ll go tonight. I’m thinking church garden stuff will happen late afternoon and then I’ll just stay for mass.

I’m hoping to get work stuff done this morning, then pumpkin stuff (so I can start testing out the glow-in-the dark stuff), then my own garden stuff.

Well that sounds like a plan.

You’re funny, doggio.

Well…gotta throw more stuff in the washer and get moving.

GT

I love The Importance of Being Earnest. I’m trying to get Mr. Lissar out of bed so we can go to church. Oh! Kettle’s boiled, must run!

Oh, for those who keep track of such things, I read Nick Hornby’s Housekeeping Vs. The Dirt a couple of days ago, and it was really good. Yesterday I read Raymond Briggs’ graphic novel Ethel and Ernest, and it was lovely, sweet and sad. It’s the story of his parents’ lives in England 1920-1970.

Good morning, all. I slept in this morning, but was awakened to the lovely fragrance of bacon cooking. Alas, it wasn’t for me – Papa Tigs had bought some bacon scraps from the Amish market and was cooking them up to be added, in small quantities, to the dogs’ kibble. They get a half dozen or so meat scraps with their kibble each meal, or sometimes a few small chunks of dog biscuit or pizza crust or, o frabjous day!, bread. Not exactly hard to please. Sometimes he save particularly nice chunks of bacon for us. Lucky me, getting the dogs’ leftovers. Does anyone think our pets are spoiled?

Off to do something constructive today. Or not. I haven’t made up my mind yet.

Another vote here for “unmotivated”. I’m even stalling to get coffee and start breakfast. I’ll get to it eventually, once I remember how hungry I am.

Good traveling swampy!

I have a couple pictures to hang, a curtain rod to raise, and a school dedication to make it to this afternoon. So unmotivated is not going to cut it, I have to get moving.

Bleh.

We have breakfasted, courtesy of Denny’s. Well, not to much courtesy of, as we had to pay, but at least I didn’t have to cook or clean up. Then we ran by Michael’s and I got some fondant cutters/cookie cutters that I’m going to use on clay. I got leaves, flowers, hearts, and stars. So I’m ready to do some ceramic decorating.

Dishwasher is running, as is the clothes washer. **FCD ** is on his way to the boat. I’m about to trim my fingernails, then I’m heading down to the studio to play. I should probably pull something out of the freezer for dinner - I think something in the seafood family sounds good.

For the record, I don’t want to go to work tomorrow. I’m facing 2 weeks of hell, thanks to converging, shortened deadlines. This after 2 months of doing pretty much nothing. Ain’t that always the way?? It sure is for me.

And off I go…

Good morning everyone.

Last night’s shindig was a big success and our last guests didn’t leave until 2:30. I even won some money in one our card rounds!

I’m very tired today. We’re all going out to breakfast at this little place a piece up the road from us. They do good breakfast.

Hope your trip is safe Swampy.

Our weather is gray and rainy. I don’t mind really; it’s good “napping” weather. I’m thinking a nap around 2:00 this afternoon is on agenda.

Afternoon, y’all.

I got myself up and got myself all churchified today. I haven’t been to one since before we moved… Had to go all the way to Elizabeth City to get it done all proper like. I was late, because the poop fairy came visiting, and I had to shampoo the spot before I left.

Came home, made brekkie, stuck a butt <snerk> in the oven, and promptly took a nap. Now that I’m up again, more crawlspace fun is in the works. The last baseboard heater has to be moved, and I have to do more wiring. Envy me.

Did the company pay for a makeover or something? :stuck_out_tongue:
Been an interesting weekend so far. Dartmouth’s homecoming is this weekend, and in the grand tradition there was a colossal bonfire on the green Friday night, around which the freshman had to run 110 laps (apparently this is the 110th bonfire). They must have designed it this way - the wooden structure was a good 30 feet tall, constructed like you’d build something out of Lincoln logs (only with real logs), and 25 minutes in it all collapsed in a fantastic blaze of glory. Did I mention I like fire?

Now, I don’t want to jinx this … but that night I did finally meet a girl I seem to be interested in. At one point she and I and the other people we were with were lined up for part of a parade, standing around for about 20 minutes, and she and I and just talked. She’s quite cute. And, as much as I don’t want to jinx it, it seems we might possibly be going out to dinner this week. breathes I’m okay, really.

Before I shoot myself in the foot, I’m going to stop here and give you all Friday’s pun.

dances off to study

So where’s rosie this weekend? Did she ask permission for a weekend off?

Spats, it is clear that you’re rather distracted (behold, the power of girls… :D), as you gave us Friday’s pun on…well…Friday. See, here it is!. I was sure I’d read it before and had to go back to make sure I wasn’t just dreaming your puns in advance.

Wound up going to church a bit earlier than planned as I’d forgotten that I had a dinner invitation. Now I’m going to go locate some yard waste bags and continue a bit of gardening at church.

Also, I need to eat lunch.

Back eventually.

GT

I think somebody must be distracted - he’d already posted that pun!

Not much going on here - I finally bought a pot so I could re-pot the pineapple top I rooted last spring. I kept it in water for a while, then just kinda stuck it in some potting soil. I noticed the other day it had a lot of new leaves on it, so I decided to repot it and bring it in so the cold wouldn’t kill it. It has quite a collection of roots growing, so maybe it will live. I don’t have much luck with houseplants - I do ok with outdoor stuff but my house doesn’t get a lot of light. I’m planning to put the pineapple plant in the brightest spot in the living room and put it outside on sunny days. Maybe it will live. If not, oh well.

Mr. SCL has to work 7p to 7a tomorrow, so he’s in the process of getting his sleep schedule switched around. He’ll be up all night tonight. He also won’t be able to go to the opening night game for the Snakes 'cause he has to work the next day. That is why I get a season ticket and he doesn’t. He will make the exhibition game on the 19th, tho.

I will be doing my share for the enviornment this coming Saturday - the Booster Club is going to participate in “Help the Hooch” - a river clean up event. After a morning of cleaning trash out of the Chattahoochee, we’ll spend a few hours writing numbers on foam pucks for the Chuck-a-Puck fundraiser. Hockey season is almost here!

I guess I’ll go play with beads some more. I ought to do some yard work 'cause it’s a really beautiful day. Or just go somewhere.

Right. :dubious: If that works for you, you have a lot more willpower than I do! That’s why I’m not allowed to go yarn shopping, or bead shopping, or fabric shopping. I’d end up buying a bunch of cashmere yarn–it sounds yummy! I don’t know how you could resist!

SCL, I tried to root a pineapple top but it didn’t work. :frowning: I hope yours does okay after the repotting.

You’re such a party animal!

swampy, do you have any leftovers? That pork sounds mighty tasty!

I had too much coffee this morning, so I said some possibly inappropriate things at church. But people expect that from me anyway, so I don’t think anybody was surprised.

I’m off to work on a grad school application. Wish me luck!

Ergh. Switching sleep schedules is not fun. Poor Mr. SCL.

Church was fine, although the music continues to suck. We called my MIL and now have tentative plans to visit sometime in November, for a weekend. It would be really nice to see her and my nephew, SIL and BIL. I’ve never met my nephew, and he’ll be 5 months old tomorrow.

I think I’ll have tea and cookies before work. Quasi-Daughter brought me five packs of Jaffa Cakes from England, and a little copy of Fra Angelico’sAnnunciation from Italy. What a loving Quasi-Daughter.

Sounds like everyone has done all kinds of constructive things today. So have I – I ended up talking with that injured Marine’s mom, and then ran out and got several pairs of sweatpants and the one pair of jersey shorts I could find in his size and came home and proceeded with sewing. Turns out he lost his left leg below the knee and his right femur was broken as well, so I had to make double breakaway pants – which is a bit time-consuming, but I needed to do at least a solid (if not beautiful) job so they’ll hold up to the amount of washing I’m sure they’ll be getting. So I just did one pair of sweatpants – learning as I go, so it takes a bit longer the first time – and will send those in with Papa Tigs tomorrow, who can deliver them, and then we can make adjustments as needed.

I find myself seriously frustrated that the kids who are losing limbs in this nasty war are not provided with adaptive clothing for what everyone knows will be long-term rehab – six months or more. With all the money our government wastes, couldn’t we provide these kids with clothing to at least cover themselves better than normal hospital wear? Not to mention breakaway pants are kind of necessary when you’re dealing with orthopedic injuries. At least I can help one young man. But there’s hundreds in a similar position. And I suspect a lot of the families, like this one, are completely financially tapped out with family members coming to stay with their wounded family son/daughter/spouse/whatever. They shouldn’t have to depend on the kindness of strangers for their basic needs!

Sorry, end of sermon. But it’s kind of a personal issue for us, since Papa Tigs has to see and hear about so many of these folks every day. And the hospital staffs are overwhelmed.

Anyway, while I was busy sewing, the pups got to go for swim #2 this weekend. And they were nearly the smallest dogs there. When they arrived at the beach, there was a labradoodle “family reunion” going on – eight labradoodles running around having a wonderful time. Then they left and the big dogs started arriving – a Newfie, a couple German Shepherds, a Doberman who was all legs, a pair of of Bernese Mountain dogs, and a dog that Papa Tigs swears had to be a Huskie/Shetland pony cross. He said it was the biggest dog on the beach! Which in that bunch must have been very big indeed. A good time, of course, was had by all.

All my friends and relatives (a cousin and his family) in Hawaii are well and accounted for. Big earthquakes are scary!

Pulled out a bunch of stuff at church and planted the chrysanthemums from last week. Nice large basketful divided nicely into 3 plants. We’ll see if they survive.

Now I’ve showered and am going to go buy a bottle of wine to take with me to dinner.

Oh…still gotta go throw some laundry in the washer…

Happy Sunday!

GT

Good heavens. She really is having an effect on me. Well, if I start babbling about the cumulative effect of polka-dotted raccoons and left-handed skyhooks on Bolivian interest rates, you’ll know why.

I had forgotten what being anxious feels like, apparently.

Polka-dotted raccoons? Bartender, I’ll have some of whatever Spats had.

Sshh! You went and spilled the Secrets to Life. <smacks rifty over the head>
Now what’ll we do, eh?
I am off to make dinner and relax a bit. Just finished up with my partner from hell…(grad school, you deviant people, grad school project!)

Hi guys!

Haven’t done much this weekend. It’s been raining all weekend, and still no cold front. I hear y’all talking about turning on the heaters and stuff, and it hasn’t even been cool enough to turn off the goldarn air conditioner!

Grocery shopping and laundry, as usual. I took a nap. I have some short ribs in the oven. The house smells beefy and garlicky and yummy.

I’ve been feeling pretty good this weekend. Yay!

Summary of the day - I threw 6 pieces, decorated a pot with stars, started decorating a bank like a kitty (I’m gonna have **FCD ** finish - he’s more artistical than I am) and finished laundry. In a few minutes, I’m going to go strip the bed, and put on nice clean sheets, then hop in the shower.

Yep, the excitement never ends in FairyChatEstates.
