Downward Dog

This started on ABC a few weeks ago. Is anyone watching it? I like it, I don’t recognize the cast, I love the dog, but I find it hard not to love any dog. I wanted to love it, and I don’t, but I think it’s enjoyable. It makes me laugh and once or twice I even got a little bit misty. I don’t know if ABC just plans in running it for the summer, or if the plan is to add it to their fall lineup.

I’m curious myself. The Tomatometer is 90% and the star, Allison Tolman, is Molly Solverson from the first season of Fargo. She was very good in that.

The ratings in key demos are okay. But I still wonder if it will last.

Looking for someone to talk me into watching it. Where does it fit on the scale from Everybody Loves Raymond to Community?

It’s funny because I watched this for the first time this weekend and liked it and thought about starting a thread on it. Some people I follow on Twitter that I think are funny said it was better than the title would suggest and sure enough they were right. The episode I saw was promising so I will watch it again.

I think it has promise, too. I’m interested to see what ABC decides to do.

I watched the first episode to be sure it was as bad as I expected it to be. They might even have a show if they remove the dog from the plot.

I don’t find it to be laugh out loud funny like Community, but it’s enjoyable and the amusing parts are the dog and his lines, his thought processes.

Previews made it seem like basically a live action version of Secret Life of Pets.

Like, it’s okay. The dog, like, saying “like” all the time gets on my nerves.

IWife and I (big dog lovers) watched the 1st ep, and decided not to watch any more. Main thing that bothered us was the dog saying he was in charge, and tearing things up. Just really offended our sense of owner/dog dynamics.

This is, like, my only real complaint with the show. Otherwise, I’m like really loving it.

I do like it a lot. I’ve been surprised at how good of a job they’re doing, really. The first episode had me lol-ing as Martin described how tough it is to get 14 hours of sleep “around here” and how a good night’s sleep is the foundation to a productive day. That, and his perspective of “couples therapy”.

Last week, I appreciated how they worked her love-life into this to keep the stories interesting. And that episode did tug on the heart strings a bit. All cleared-up when the cat entered the house, ha!

Not only this but the actor who voices him just has, I don’t know if “unpleasant” is the right term, but I’ll just say it doesn’t work for me. As is so often the case, the voice doesn’t match what I hear in my mind’s ear. Same with the voice they gave Grumpy Cat for that Christmas special a couple years ago.

Yes! I don’t like how the dialogue is written for the dog, or the semi-whiny voice it’s done in. The rest of it is OK, but I don’t think this will last long.

The dog would be fine if it wasnt a bad dog.

I would agree the Dog’s voice took getting used to.

I agree, I wish someone else was doing Martin’s voice. To me, it just sounds too resigned, for lack of a better way to put it, like this is how it is, or I know this to be true, idk. I can’t really describe it.

Like, this…so this.

The show would be much more enjoyable if the dog’s voice didn’t remind me of a moronic 13 year old girl.

Show is ok but I hate the title.

I completely like the dog and his personality and voice. He’s a dog. What I can’t get is the people he’s stuck living with. They have no business being in a TV show. But like the good boy he is, he loves them anyway.

I just noticed that the actor who plays the boyfriend was Jimmy Chance in Raising Hope.

Watched a second episode. This one was less funny but it feels like the creators were going for a slightly more serious story. Still promising. Will watch a third.

I think I have have finally figured out what is going on with the dog voice: it sounds like he’s doing a kind of Christopher Walken impression. Once my brain clicked on that, I couldn’t unhear it. I don’t think the voice actor is doing it intentionally but that’s what his voice sounds like to me.
