A British journalist published a book earlier this year called So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed about how people like this kid or the Chick-fil-A guy get shamed on the Internet and how this compares to the public humiliation that used to be practiced about two hundred years ago (e.g., putting someone in stocks). One question is when such shamings are worse than the crime. (For example, in earlier times, this kid’s misbehavior would have gone unnoticed outside his university. But instead people all over the world are aware of it.)
If only the same thing could be done with politicians
The problem with many politicians is that they are shameless. And by that I mean the kind that embeezled millions of dollars, bankrupted the company through mismanagement, and on and on and can still run on a platform “sound business practices” with a straight face.
Nah, it’s more that half the people don’t care if they get drunk and do stupid shit, they will still vote for them.
I don’t think any of us can do that, Monty.
I don’t know who’s the biggest Fuckin Idiot™:
- Luke, 2) the person who took the trouble to create a transcript of that mess or 3) me for wasting several minutes reading the first part of it.
I want to second that this is a really good book.
Normally I’d be more sympathetic- nobody deserves trial by Internet. But this guy’s record seems to indicate chronic douchiness.
Fake. Obviously this is a viral Kraft Mac & Cheese commercial.
Hey Monty? The dude is flapping his dick around on camera in that link.
I won’t quote it, but I think that one post seemed QFT. It was the one that stated that “kid has empathy problems, i.e. sociopath”.
That level of empathy problems seems (to a layman) to indicate a severe sociopath. If there was someone with an MD who could verify just that aspect (empathy problems are a Symptom of Sociopathy: Y / N) , I’d love to know if that is confirmed or totally inaccurate.
What does “I won’t quote it” mean in your world?
That with over 1300 posts, many a full paragraph length, listing 5 words and an abbreviation that didn’t even include the entire post seemed acceptable.
And NO… you Can’t have your Jalapeno Mac & Cheese…
Ph.D. ( psychologist) and the answer is in essence yes. Sociopathy is not a clinical condition. Lack of remorse is a symptom of antisocial personality disorder, and a lack of empathy is a symptom of the new specifier of “limited prosocial emotions” for conduct disorder. The related concept of psychopathy is also not technically a diagnosis, but it is a concept we might refer to, and it includes a lack of empathy.
FYI, his court date is Tuesday.
And he’ll show up in a suit and tie with daddy’s attorney, tell about how that wasn’t the real him and he’s ashamed of his actions and please don’t punish him because he’s been punished enough already.
Then he’ll walk out of court laughing and having learned nothing, and do the same thing next month.
Thread title recalls All I Wanted Was A Pepsi
On Sunday, the kid posted a YouTube video apologizing for his behavior. Here’s an article from the Hartford Courant on the video. The kid’s father says that they’ve filed a motion for a continuance, so the court hearing may not occur tomorrow.
Same reason 2 female students didn’t. Ain’t their job, ain’t no upside in it.
Or are you suggesting it is men’s jobs to insert themselves into violent situations when they’re annoyed?
Absolutely not. They did the right thing by letting the staff try to manage the situation and the security to deal with it in the end. A bunch of kids (male or female) jumping in to “help”- no way.
Are you two fucking kidding?
Stand around and watch while someone gets assaulted right in front of you?
Which is EXACTLY what happened.
Civilized adults assist people who need assistance.
