Morning all. Bright and shiny outdoors and 47F which will get to 68F. Trash and Recyclables are both at the curb and ready for pickup and a session at the gym is on the agenda, but otherwise a day of sloth is likely.
Sari, glad Cerby has another chance for a full life and hope Ripple does better.
FCM, happy boat-moving. Huddle House is common down South and is a little more…restauranty I guess…than Waffle House, but similar building. I go there once and awhile. No Perkins anywhere close to me, we have Denny’s and IHOP for places I almost never go too…like suzie I like Bob Evans, but alas there is none in my area.
As for the suspenders, I had a pair 30 years ago, they were even harder to remember than my belt, so I think I’ll stick with it and hope the memory improves.
Pilot(LSL guy), I think I walked through a Whole Foods once and that was quite enough, thank you. Same for trader Joe’s.
JtC, loved the story of the Cracker Barrel; I can see why your instinct was to whack that guy with your cane.
shoe, don’t blame you for being scared, but the manager should have done those check and figured it out before scaring you half to death, IMHO. Hope your nerves have stopped jangling.
{{nellie}}, hope they find something for the itching.
OK, time to break fast and be about the day. All y’all have a good Thorsday.
Two utterly different experiences IMO/IME. But there is an area of overlap in that it seems Karens of either sex like to shop there. At least the ones in TJs seem to know the store is funnin’ with them. Not so at WF; they take their Karening seriously.
i’m glad to hear cerby is running around and riding in luxury. i hope things work out for him.
sorry to hear about ripple. i hope he can heal up.
i also had trouble sleeping last night. the time change is catching up. i woke up 4 or 5 x. i had “cabin pressure” playing low so i had something to lull me back to sleep. hopefully things will straighten out next week. i don’t have this kind of trouble with time zones and traveling. just the dst time change.
lager is doing well, his numbers have been good. he throws in a wild number every now and again. he is losing his enthusiasm for the wet food. it is purposely bland for his tummy, but i think he misses a bit of crunch. i do give him some real chicken every now and again.
i’ve been to ihop, but not waffle house, perkins, or cracker barrel. lots of howard johnson’s and stuckey’s. we would drive from pa to ne to visit my father’s family; most of the restaurants on the interstate or turnpikes were either of those 2.
I know each of these words individually, but have no idea what ^^ means.
I’ve never even heard of Perkins or Stuckeys.
Waffle House, IME is where you haul your sorry carcass when you’re so hungover you can barely hold up your head. The line cooks all look like, collectively, they’ve done about three, four, maybe five decades in prison (all together) and you do. not. mess. with the waitress.
Food’s always good, though. They don’t have 'em up here in western Mitten State, sadly.
We were talking about storms at work once and I mentioned the Waffle House Index and everyone looked at me all confused like I’d grown three heads.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 10c/50f with a predicted high of 10.0001c/51f and rain showers. Weather app says “My favourite rainy day activity is going back inside and putting my fucking pyjamas back on” which I would heartily agree with today.
Yesterday was an utterly horrible day. Whisper was looking very sorry for himself and it was heartbreaking to look at him, he’d lost a lot of weight almost overnight and looked very down. We were at the vets just after 11am, they wanted to do a series of blood tests, keep him in for IV fluids and to see what they could do for him. We left him there, and went grocery shopping since we were out already. I was home and unpacking groceries when the vet phoned to say that Whisper’s test results had come back showing catastrophic kidney failure. If he was human, he would have been straight on dialysis and on the transplant list.
She said they could try maximising fluids for 48hrs to see if they could flush his kidneys through, but the reality was that even if they could do that, he was unlikely to have functioning organs at the end of it and it would buy him an extra week, two at the most. Absolutely not the news we had expected, we thought it was a UTI or something that could be fixed with anti-biotics. We went straight back to the vets and were with him for his last moments. We’d only had him a couple of years, initially as a foster cat but we couldn’t part with him. We spent the rest of the day crying over him, and over what else we could have done for him.
To top it off, they had tested for FIV as well, and that came back positive which we hadn’t expected either. So today I was back at the vet with Shadow to get his blood taken for an FIV test, just waiting to hear the results of that one.
Two cats gone, in three months. It’s definitely time to give Shadow lots of extra cuddles and treats.
Just read the Wiki article on Perkins Restaurant and Bakery. I knew them as Perkins Cake & Steak, and was under the impression they’d gone extinct back in the late '90s. Google Maps says the closest one is two and a half hours away from here. The closest Cracker Barrel is about 40 minutes away, and the closest IHOP is an hour. Too far away for just a restaurant visit.
The chain I really miss is Fuddruckers – used to be one here at the casino, but it closed a couple years back and the closest ones are now two hours away. Real bliss, of course, would be having Fogo de Chão open a branch at the casino…
I called the allergy clinic this morning. It’s weird. None of the options are for leaving a message for the doctor. I opted for the nurse line as the closest thing but got their voicemail saying to leave a message and they’d call back within 72 hours. I assume that’s 72 business hours, so Tuesday at the latest? Not sure what else to do. Waiting for a call back reminds me of that old Vicki Carr song,
That’s when the phone rings and I jump And as I grab the phone I pray
Let it please be him, oh dear God It must be him, it must be him Or I shall die
I always thought that song was a little hysterical. Go shopping or invent a cure for cancer or something. Now I figure she was just itching (for some lovin’).
BooFae, I am so sorry about Whisper. Damn, that was sudden. You must still be in shock. I hope kitty cuddles help.
Sari, argh. I hope Ripple’s condition improves. Could the Cerby stress have exacerbated the cancer situation? It seems unlikely, but the timing has me wondering. Big hugs, and I hope the vet gives you a volume discount.
Happy Birthday, Ace!
FCM, the Perkins was 100 miles away from us in the “Big City” ( pop. 90k), but since that was also the closest shopping mall and where most medical specialists were, most people in our town made the drive fairly often. There was always a wait at the Perkins, and it always smelled deliciously of pancakes. There’s no Perkins here. I can sympathize with FCD.
Herald, there was a Fuddruckers in the mall I mentioned. The burgers were good.
There’s a TJ’s about a mile from me. I’ve never noticed any Karens, though there are people with a zealous light in their eyes who look like they eat only groats and fiddleheads. It’s a cult, I tell ya! What I like is that the layout has you wheeling your cart past virtuous breads made by bakeries with names like Dappled Woods Farms, through the overpriced produce, and down the Aisles of Virtue. Then bam! You’re in the frozen food aisle surrounded by chocolate mousse cake and lobster ravioli. And thus to the liquor aisle. Cracks me up, it does.
Thanks so much for all the sympathetic comments, everyone!
We were supposed to go to the symphony today. Drove over there, entered the parking garage, then crawled in a line of cars up seven floors and out onto the roof, made the “fuck it” decision, spiraled back down to the ground floor and headed for home. Consolation prize: a cream-filled donut from the store on the way home.
Daughter-in-law informed me that her father is now in palliative care. Prostate cancer metastasized to his spine, so he’s a goner. She’ll be flying back to England for goodbyes. Sad situation, as they’re very close.
On the good side, my daughter is supposed to come over this weekend for a visit.
Guess you’ve never been down I75 to Florida.
The first time we ate at a Perkins was on the way home somewhere north of Chattanooga; it was very good; was the recommendation of one of my in-laws old neighbors.
We’ve eaten at Waffle House quite a few times, in Tenn, GA & FL, oh and one time in VA when visiting SIL and her fam.
We’ve also eaten at Cracker Barrel frequently when on vacation. As a matter of fact, yesterday when I was discussing the menu for our trip for a Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in SE Ohio, my sis said she wanted to eat at a Cracker Barrel for lunch on our way there and our way back.
I think I’ve only eaten at a Huddle House once in Franklin, Tenn because it was the only restaurant open at 9pm.
{boofae} so sorry to hear about your precious kitty.
Cookie have a great visit with your daughter! Our daughter is coming home tomorrow as well, can’t wait, I think she’s also bringing Bella.
Whew! I just got a call back, and from the doctor, herself! She’s bumping up my meds even more and–ugh–putting me on Prednisone. 9 days of nausea, insomnia, palpitations, and eating everything in sight. Fun times. Hopefully all this helps.
Cookie, I’m sorry about your daughter-in-law’s dad. I’m glad your own daughter is coming to see you–and that you got a donut!
CatGlove, I’ve only been to a Cracker Barrel once. I was underwhelmed, but maybe it was just that one location. It was in Iowa.
If it was in Council Bluffs Iowa I know that place and I agree. The food was mediocre and way over salted. The biscuits, which were highly touted, were stale as if they were left over from a day or two ago.
Howdy Y’all! I did venture out today. I got a call that the edger was ready. I had taken it in two weeks ago and knew it would be a while cause the place I use for that stuff was crazy busy. So I donned jeans and a tshirt and went to bring it back home. Jeans and tshirt are perfectly fine to wear to Lee Power and Equipment. They ain’t fancy.
I’ve eaten at a Perkin’s one time. I was on a trip for irk in Iowa and thought, why not. Food was pretty good and I can say I’ve been to a Perkin’s. I remember when KMart had cafeterias. :: shudder ::
Oops, my bad, it was Franklin, North Carolina.
The very best store to purchase footware for hiking/backpacking is in Franklin, NC. It’s Outdoor 76.
So, we stopped in Franklin on our way home from Florida so I could be fitted for new shoes; I ended up buying 2 pair, one for hiking and one for everyday. I also hiked a 6 mile section of the Appalachian Trail that day as well.
My project number three, the first one done with my sewing machine, is done and has joined the pile of quilts here waiting for time on the long arm. I started this class a feww weeks after buying my machine because it has lots of techniques i needed to learn:
Last night’s music was awesome, but I rashly decided to stay for the second show/set and got home way later than I should have on a weeknight! I’m paying for it today. I was already tired when I got up, then I saw my therapist and ran a few errands at lunchtime…I wound up quitting work pretty early, because I just couldn’t think/deal with people any more. I did pick up the aforementioned record, though. Turns out the artist had three kinds there: the usual black vinyl, a special edition clear/marbled vinyl, and a special-er edition “only available at live shows” blue vinyl. Of course, I got the latter.
I’m thinking about ditching my 6-year-old, $80 turntable and getting a new one with Bluetooth (like this) so I can play records through my living room stereo without cables…which would be useful, since I moved the turntable kind of far away from the stereo about a year ago and the built-in speakers kind of suck!
A guy sat near me at the bar last night, and we quickly discovered that we both knew the singer; he actually works with her mom (who I also know/am friends with). We wound up chatting most of the night. He was cute and age-appropriate and seemed smart/interesting, and he also seemed to be flirting a little, but my hopes were not hopeful for long: by the end of the first show he was drunk (like, English-became-his-second-language drunk), and then he went outside and got high. Now, don’t get me wrong: I have ZERO problem with either alchohol or weed! I fully intend to drink again someday, and when pot becomes legal legal – i.e., federally – I’ll most likely indulge from time to time. But (a) I once lived with a functioning alcoholic and refuse to ever deal with that again (so what would be simple “caution” flags to others are often red flags to me), and (b) for the time being, my job makes it tricky for me to be around pot/users. I also realized that I’m simply not interested in dating anyone in his 40s who goes to a bar alone and gets wasted in less than 90 minutes. Made me feel kind of old, but ah well. It was still fun to meet someone new.
Today’s errands were mostly successful: the poster-sized photo of my uncle (for his funeral Mass next month) turned out well, I was able to have a Boar’s Head chicken caesar wrap for lunch for the third day in a row (and I picked up a roast beef and cheddar sandwich for tomorrow), and I got my “good” glasses back. I’m not sure the new prescription is completely right, though. I’ll go back to the optometrist on Saturday if needed, but meanwhile it’s really nice to have the lighter frames again.
It’s also been really nice to have my windows open this afternoon! It’s only in the 60s, so a little on the cool side, but warm enough to let some air in this place.
It’s nearly 5:30pm, and I’m about to relocate to the living room: I’m looking forward to doing a lot of nothing for a few hours, then going to bed early.
No, but I would have laughed pretty hard if it had been!
I love Cabin Pressure! I bought the CDs a few years ago and put the MP3s on my iPod, and I used to listen during my daily commutes – but then came COVID, and I started working from home. And I’m not one to just sit around the house and listen to that kind of stuff. I think I left off somewhere around “Ipswich”…? I should probably just start over. Thanks for the reminder: I’ll listen when I’m driving to/from NJ next month!
