I’ll be excused, I hope, if at this point I begin to laugh my ass off.
For those of you saying that this instance of “plagiarism” is insignificant, I’ll point you to a story about the most famous instance of it on the SDMB:
The Bottom Line Plagiarism is no laughing matter. The words you steal belong to someone else’s soul.
I co-wrote a cybersex parody article with fellow humorist Larry Graves about two years ago entitled When Lanny met Angel. Our parody chat occurred in an AOL chat room between two strangers passing in the night, and the verbal antics and misunderstandings that can happen in the chatroom.
When Plagiarism met Angela
A man named Wally took the article, changed the names and claimed it as his own. He frequented a popular humor site and posted the story. The owners of the site were putting together an anthology of posts, and Wally’s, or rather my story, was going to be published in the book.
Finally being made aware of this, I read back through months of posts where people were congratulating him on the story. He became a mini-legend on this particular message board. He stopped the messages abruptly at one point. That’s because Wally met with a tragic accident a year ago and passed away.
If the book had been published, it would have been memoir to Wally.
If Larry and I had pursued the rights issue, we would have been chasing after a dead man’s honor. A few weeks later, the board’s owner pulled all the messages, so the point is mute.
Yes, I just kicked at that particular can of worms (there’s much more to it than just that), but I think that that scandal, more than anything else, is why people get jacked up about the topic. A lot of the early people here got burned, and I don’t think anybody wants to see it happen again, not even for something stupid and unfunny.

I’ll be excused, I hope, if at this point I begin to laugh my ass off.
I find myself marveling at his creativity. Had he only shown the same creativity in his writing his balls wouldn’t be in a sling.
Yes. I changed my e-mail because it contains my real name, something which I didn’t want others broadcasting, since apparently PMs aren’t private, so why should e-mail addresses be? In any case, yes, changing my e-mail removed any write privileges from my account. twickster, shame on you for making my PM public, especially in a public posting containing an official moderator action. Whatever your motivation was, it’s bad form.
Now.
Oakminster, you shit-eating kiss-ass junior moderator. Let’s get something straight:
You are not an SDMB moderator. They don’t need your assistance. Plus, if I have to read you try to coach them on how to moderate, because you know, as we’ve heard way too many fucking times that you’re a moderator on another board, I’m going to puke. Knock that shit off, you pathetic blowhard.
I berated you privately for being just that. You thought you were Sherlock Fucking Holmes who unlocked the secret to the location of the Holy Fucking Grail. Since the plagIarism warning has been rescinded, do you care to take back your stupid little assertion that what I posted was plagiarism? Or do you disagree with twickster’s action by reversing the warning? Oops. Which is it, admit you might have been wrong or <gasp> disagree with a [real] moderator? PlagIarism is a serious accusation which shouldn’t be thrown around lightly. You know why the warning was rescinded, you pasty asshole? Because I had nothing to gain from it other than making other users laugh. A plagiarist usually has something to gain by copying others’ work: money, fame, and academic accolades come to mind. Please point the fuck out where I was to gain anything by posting that stupid list.
Regarding calling me a coward: do you really think that? Really? You really thought that I’d be bothered by, or worse, afraid of, any stupid retort you’d have? I would have squashed you like the fat little junebug you are, much like I’m doing now. I’ve been through shit in my life that would put you in a permanent fetal position on the bottom of your filthy bathtub with the shower running. For you to think I was actually avoiding your weak ass response to my PM, is about as bizarre as your being sure that I committed plagiarism.
All of a sudden this guy is a fucking humor guru? There is a plain to see difference between plagiarism and cut/paste IMHO. Fly over it doors. Or are you the Mohamed Atta of this thread?
Holy SHIT. I think, boys and girls, we’re about due for a meltdown.

You did, in fact, change your email to avoid responses.

No, I changed it because I didn’t want it made public.

lol great thread
Agreed. I sometimes wonder if nits are upset that they have no nits to pick…

Now.
Oakminster, you shit-eating kiss-ass junior moderator. Let’s get something straight:
I think that’s the first time I’v been accused of kissing mod ass. I’m guessing you weren’t paying attention during the unpleasantness last February?
Plus, if I have to read you try to coach them on how to moderate, because you know, as we’ve heard way too many fucking times that you’re a moderator on another board, I’m going to puke. Knock that shit off, you pathetic blowhard.
Did you write that yourself, or copy it from somewhere?
I berated you privately for being just that. You thought you were Sherlock Fucking Holmes who unlocked the secret to the location of the Holy Fucking Grail.
Is that a “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor” thing, like in Animal House?

You committed plagiarism. I called you on it and alerted the mods of the rule violation to deal with as they saw fit. I did not request any particular mod action.
Regarding calling me a coward: do you really think that? Really? You really thought that I’d be bothered by, or worse, afraid of, any stupid retort you’d have?
It seems consistent with the behavior you’ve displayed.
I would have squashed you like the fat little junebug you are, much like I’m doing now.
At least you’re not crushing my head, like that guy from The Kids in the Hall

Cry Moar PLS. LOL. PWNED.
OK, I think we’re done here.

No, I changed it because I didn’t want it made public.
There’s an option in User CP for that.
Mods can still access your email, if they find it necessary, but ordinary posters cannot if you choose not to allow it.
Why in the world would you blast Oakminster and Twickster, and somehow feel that it was fair to not allow them to blast you back? Especially since the latter is a mod?

No, I changed it because I didn’t want it made public.
Just FYI: You can hide it by unchecking the “Receive Email from Other Members” box in User Control Panel>Edit Options. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/profile.php?do=editoptions
ETA: What **Frank **said.
nevermind.

Good lord, Frank. Do try to keep up. Let’s go slow this time.
Since a MODERATOR made a private message public, I changed the e-mail address because the line of what’s private and public seemed a little blurred at the time, to some and I didn’t want my e-mail address made public.
Still with me?
I didn’t realize that changing my e-mail address would lock my private message inbox or prevent me from posting. I assumed that my e-mail address would have no affect on these functions.
Check?
Since I changed my e-mail address at the same time I received the warning, and didn’t know it would affect my PM/posting abilities, I assumed that my account was put into suspended mode.
Please tell me this makes sense to you, because I really don’t know how to put it any simpler.

…but hey, maybe Dudley Garrett just doesn’t have the classiness that Starving Artist does. That would be something.
Thanks, I think.
Your E-mail addy is still plain to see Kenneth.

Shouldn’t be.

Please tell me this makes sense to you, because I really don’t know how to put it any simpler.
How about something like:
- “I was wrong to copy and paste that list here without acknowledging the source, or at least saying I found it on the web. When I got called on it, I was really an asshole to Twickster, and I apologize for it. I accept my warning and won’t do this again.”*
Because that could be considered a cool thing for you to do right about now.

Um, no, because I disagree with it… and apparently twickster does as well as the warning was rescinded.
Rescinded. Reversed.
Do you get it now?

Shouldn’t be.
'tain’t.
No seriously, it is hidden now.
