Dumb computer question

My HD crashed and I had to buy a new one. None of the orignal settings were saved. My computer cam worked with the old HD but the Windows does not recognize the USB device. Windows recognizes new hardware and finds a Root Hub and Controllers, actually two root hubs and one open and one Universal Controller. Any advice on how to get Windows to recognize my video cam? The cam is an Intel Create and Share. I though that maybe it was the USB card so I bought and installed another. Now I have four USB plugs but Windows cannot ID my cam. What am I doing wrong? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How did you restore the new hard drive? Did you restore from a backup that had all the drivers or did you do a fresh windows install? Sounds like you need to reinstall drivers for the camera.

More than likely your camera came with software for installation. This disk will contain the drivers needed to properly configure the device. You may need to go to the Control Panel, select “Add New Hardware”, and follow the steps from there. Windows will try to select a driver for you, but probably will not find the appropriate one. This is where you select “Have disk” and map the location to your CD drive. The driver should have a .drv extension on it. If you see more than one .drv file, select the one that matches the model of your camera.

If this doesn’t help, try browsing the disk (if you still have it) with windows explorer, and look for a “setup” or “.ini” file and run it. If you still can’t get anywhere, you might try Intel’s website for more info.

Good luck!

What version windows & what type of computer? You do know some versions don’t recognize usb, right?

handy, the computer recognised the camera before the HD crashed.
It’s pretty obvious that whatever version of Windows he’s using, it supports USB devices.

when you plug any device into the USB, a window should pop up telling you there is new hardware and do you have the drivers. If this does not happen then even though windows sees the USB hub it is not working correctly. Look for resource conflicts on the USB.

That occured to me but he may have updated after installing the version that doesn’t.

wild guess here…

Windows 95B was not initally built with USB support, but a suppliment was put on the CD so it could work. It would be very possible for the system to initally work with USB, but not after the reload because the suppliment was not installed.

Its on the windows 95 CD – do a search for usbsupp on the cd and run that file. Go to the device manager (Right click on my computer, choose properties, then device manager) find the USB support under other devices, remove it. refresh.

if the system asks for any missing files they are in the C:\windows\system directory
