Early Republican Straw Poll: Who do you want to run against Obama?

Basically this is a poll for people who want to see Obama defearted in 2012? Who’s your horse? Feel free to explain youir choice. This is only an opinion poll for anti-Obama posters, so I’d ask pro-Obama posters not to turn it into a debate. I’m trying to gauge who conservative posters would like to back, not argue them out of anything.

Any way to add choices? I’ve certainly heard Newt Gingrich being mentioned, and I think Mike Huckabee is generally considered to be a contender.

David Petreaus is the best hope for the Republicans.

I should have put Petraeus in the poll. If there’s any way to edit polls, I don’t know what it is, and the window’s probably closed now anyway. I guess he’ll have to go under “other.”

For whatever it’s worth Gen. Petraraeus has repeatedly said that he’s not interested.

Added David Petreaus for you. Couldn’t change order of names-sorry.

Thank you.

Do you have to be anti-Obama or just Republican?

Basically anyone who wants to see Obama defeated. I didn’t really mean you have to be rabidly anti-Obama. All Republican responses are welcome.

Good idea,** Dio**! As someone in the middle, I am curious to see what arguments might make me vote for someone else, and who that someone else might be. So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to ask the voters to explain their vote if that reason hasn’t been offered yet.

One of those Other votes is mine for Huckabee. How could you leave him off & have Crist, Jindal & Pawlenty on?

I don’t know much about politicians in general, so my strategy is to wait until there are only two or three contenders left in the race, and do a point-by-point comparison on their policies.

Mind you, if Sarah Palin was in the race, I’d vote for Donald Duck and his running mate Bozo T. Clown before letting Stark Raving Sarah anywhere near the white house. If I had realized how unstable she was back in November, I would have voted for Obama even though I like McCaine.

Basically this. I think this characterization -

is unfortunate.

It is way too soon to assume that I will be voting against Obama. And it is not necessarily the case that I would vote for anybody who runs against Obama. I don’t support what Obama has done so far, generally (such as it is), but I can think of others who would be worse.

I also think your poll might be a teeny bit more reliable if it were public. I see that Sarah Palin has currently about 40%, but not one poster mentions why. I am sure there could be a number of reasons for this - maybe Palin supporters have learned that any mention of her name triggers a pile-on. Or perhaps not everyone who chose her in your poll will actually vote for her should she run in 2012.

That having been said, Mitt Romney is my choice. His financial background would be valuable in dealing with the consequences of the enormous deficit Obama and Co. are racking up, he has executive experience, he is used to dealing with a recalcitrant legislature, and is a person of very high moral character.

And of course, he is not Bush, and is therefore just as qualified as anyone else for a Nobel Prize.

Regards,
Shodan

I’m kind of surprised at the numbers for Palin. I too wonder if those are all Republicans or if some Dems are tampering with the numbers. I thought I might get more honest results if I kept the voting anonymous, but now I’m second guessing the wisdom of that.

And yeah, I should have put Huckabee on this poll too. It’s my first attempt at a poll. I guess I didn’t design it very well.

I’m thinking something similar. It’s not impossible, especially with this few votes, but SDMB conservatives ( to use a semi-accurate shorthand ) mostly don’t strike me as natural Palin constituents.

(Bolding added)

[Freud voice] Ja, here ve can zee ze zubliminal fear zat ze Obama vill be reelected despite ze efforts of ze OP. Zat ist very revealink. [/voice]

Or it may be a typo.

I’m a little suprised at Palin too - even given her popularity I would have thought most would find her too polarizing to gain the middle grounders the right needs to win.

No Republican will beat Obama in 2012. It’s not going to happen. Therefore, whoever runs in 2012 will essentially be a sacrificial lamb. Palin is not a viable candidate for 2012 or 2016, so the GOP should put her up in 2012 so she can lose, and then put up Jindahl in 2016.

I voted before I read the question properly, and since I don’t necessarily want Obama out of office I wasn’t supposed to vote.

I picked Jindal, though.

I’m not thrilled with any of them so far, but it is waaaaayyyyy early yet. Some of these may become more plausible as the campaign goes on, but we’ll see.

I’m interested in Jindal, interested in Petraeus, don’t know Pawlenty from a hole in the ground, don’t like Crist, and I’m not crazy about Romney’s chances due to his having what some will see as a wacky religion (which I don’t mind but could hurt his chances in the general election).

Not sure that Palin can recover from the combination of Tina Fey and her own mouth. If she can, it won’t be in this election cycle.

Crist is a non-starter. The Republicans will not nominate a homosexual for office in the next fifty years- not even a closeted one who has sex with several hot women just to keep people guessing.
