Egg Nog Half Life

It’s egg nog season again, and I’ve discovered that egg nog has two half lives.

  1. I really like the first glassful. The second one is pretty good. The third one is OK. The fourth one is enough. (Half life, approx 2 days.)

  2. There’s still some left after the fourth glass, and that remains in the refrigerator until it congeals or something, and then it gets thrown out. (Half life, from beverage to slurry to science project, about 6 days.)

I’m still at the “I really like it” stage.

Zoinks…you mean there are people who actually drink eggnog on purpose? I’d rather give a blowjow complete with swallowing and have a shot of bourbon afterwards. At least, my way you don’t need to wash the glass of white, sticky residue when you’re done. But hey, if it puts ya in the holiday spirit, go with it, I guess.

Umm… what does it decay to? [sym]a[/sym] or [sym]b[/sym] emission?

[sym]g[/sym], or rather, “gummy” particles.

Mmmmm… gummy particles.

Now the question:
Home-made, carton or canned?

(I tried to make home-make egg-nog once - fared better than my attempt at making soap). I prefer the one from the carton, whereas (former)Roommate prefers the canned stuff.

And this reminds me, I do need to pick up a new nutmeg grater and a couple of fresh nutmegs, just in case, ya know, anyone drops by with some egg nog.

Just in case.

Simple home-made eggnog:

milk
vanilla ice cream
egg substitute (don’t want anyone to get sick!)
nutmeg

This is the way I learned to make it as a kid, except we used one real egg for each batch. Handn’t thought of trying this again until about a week ago.

Eggnog. Gross.

I can’t drink egg nog without gagging. It reminds me of the stuff my dogs sometimes puke up early in the morning (ya know, that yellowish bile-ish stuff… Same look and feel… gross…)

I think I’m gonna go barf now.

E.

I once left my cup of eggnog in the microwave too long, and it turned into a sort of eggnog custard.

Now I sometimes do it on purpose.

Eggnog and fruitcake make me thankful that I am jewish.

It’s about time for McWormburgers to start seving EggNog Shakes agian… Just about the only reason I’ll ever go to that place.

If you’re going the icecream homemade route, be sure to use French Vanilla icecream. Also, don’t forget the shot (or five) of rum.

Well, I enjoy eggnog, but if I’m ever over at your place I’m going to order the special.

Forget Egg Nog. Make a Tom & Jerry. 100 times better. More of a hassle to make, though.

For 2 Tom & Jerrys:

1.5 cups milk, heated
1 egg, separated
1 shot brandy
1 shot rum - dark is best
2 T. Sugar
nutmeg

Beat egg white with 1 T. sugar until it forms medium to stiff peaks (I like 'em stiff, others like 'em a little less)

Whisk egg yolk with 1 T. sugar until frothy.

Fold egg whites into egg yolks. Fold until mixed.

Slowly pour the liquor into the egg mixture. Fold gently until combined.

Divide egg mixture into two mugs. Fill with warm milk. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Enjoy!

Carton.

I haven’t had home-made since I was in the Army in Germany. We whipped up a batch in a big vat and added the necessary five quarts of rum. I was supposed to’ve had the day off, but some German general picked that day to visit our brigade commander, so they called me to the headquarters for gopher duty. I had already had a couple of canteen cups full of nog, and had a buzz going. When I got to the headshed, the colonel took one look at me and told me to go back and send somebody else in. Cool.

Mmmmm, eggnog. To those of us who like it, the texture is something like thick melted ice cream.

If you are getting tired of it, try some brandy in it. :stuck_out_tongue: Or try switching brands. I like adorned and unadorned Borden, but Braums doesn’t taste quite right with the brandy. Canned is just nasty. It has a gritty texture that just isn’t right.

I’ve never made my own. It seems like the sort of recipe that makes enough for a crowd. However, I might have to try that recipe to get something I’ve always wanted… chocolate eggnog.

By the way, I’ve seen eggs in the store that are pasteurized - in the shell. So you should be able to use those without risking death.

There are people who don’t like eggnog??!!

wow, i must lead a sheltered life at christmas… i’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like it.
mmmmm, eggnog…

I think i’ll go buy some right now.

I agree about those shakes. No alcohol allowed in our home, unless it’s for cooking only. Maybe we should try rum extract in the eggnog?
