I’m pretty sure Rita Moreno won all four, as did Barbra Streisand (although one of hers might have been an honorary award rather than a competitive one). Also, I think I remember reading in Marvin Hamlisch’s obits that he was a four-time winner.
After reading the list…
Mike Nichols seems like an obvious one, now that I think of it. But Whoopi Goldberg was a surprise.
I was in the same boat. I was quite surprised to see how many have actually done it, though it’s interesting that five out of the eleven received their Grammys for non-musical recordings.
You know, these threads are the time of the year when one flings a dipstick down their wells of their ignorance and struggles to get it back, they really are. Of the prestigious 11, I only really know Mel Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg. I’ve *heard *of Audrey Hepburn, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen her on screen.
The rest of that lot ? Fuck if I know.
I must be getting young. Get off my astroturf, grandpa.
Shit… The Oscar was for that movie he did where he portrayed a Precious-like version of his own life. I’ll have to look up the title… Ok, it was called Hard To Watch (Based on the novel Stone Cold Bummer by Manipulate), though he really should have won one for Honky Grandma Be Trippin’.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady? The Steven Spielberg film Always? Honky Grandma Be Trippin’?
Just out of curiosity, how old are you? If you’re under 40 (heck, probably under 50), and aren’t a fan of older movies, it’s not entirely surprising that you haven’t ever seen Audrey Hepburn.
She was a huge star in the 1950s and early 1960s, but only had five roles after 1967, as she stepped away from acting to devote time to family, and her humanitarian work with UNICEF.
Mo Rocca profiled Rita Moreno for CBS Sunday Morning a few months ago and suggested that EGOT winners should be said to have achieved the “full Moreno.”
I was born in '81. *You *do the math, because it depresses me a little more every time.
Oh yes. Like I said, I know *of *her. I’m aware that she’s a big star, a cinema goddess, a pop culture monument even. I just don’t know who the hell she is, ye ken ?
More seriously, I can’t think of any other EGOT winners but I do believe Matt Stone and Trey Parker will be joining the list in the next few years, especially if Book of Mormon gets adapted for the big screen at some point. They already have multiple Emmy’s and Tony’s, and BoM won them a Grammy - so once they lock up an Oscar they can wear that sweet EGOT hardware around their necks.
A key issue is that Rita Moreno was the first, and I think along with Whoopi, the only two who have won all four awards strictly for performing. IOW Brooks and others didn’t win them all for acting or singing etc. They won for producing, sound editing, composing etc. That’s why most of the EGOT winners are not household names.
Something that surprised me is that Moreno won her Emmy for that silly 70s PBS kid’s show The Electric Company (which also starred Morgan Freeman). Not saying she necessarily didn’t deserve it, I just expected it to have been for a slightly ‘meatier’ role…
Actually, it was for her song-and-dance stint hosting THE MUPPET SHOW. But if it makes you feel better, she then promptly won another Emmy for THE ROCKFORD FILES.
