This train of thought was actually inspired by Lady Gaga.
I remember reading a story about how, after her Oscar win, she collapsed on the red carpet crying and saying how this was a dream come true and was overwhelmed and all that jazz. After hearing that, my first thought was “I mean, you won the Oscar for singing a song…it’s what you do, it’s not really THAT impressive. If you won for acting (like your Emmy) then I’m impressed.” I believe she is 3/4 of the way to an EGOT with two of her three for singing and one for acting.
I’m not saying getting an EGOT is easy, quite the opposite in fact, but it is easier to obtain if you’re good at one thing that translates to all four. Take Kristen Anderson and Robert Lopez. Their EGOT is all for writing music, so it’s not terribly impressive as far as EGOTs go. Even John Legend had to get his final award for producing, which is really just funding the production.
What would be, in your mind, the most impressive EGOT a person could have? To me, that means completely diverse skill set:
Grammy – Best Record
Oscar – Best Director
Emmy – Lead Actor in a Drama
Tony – Best Book (that’s the writing one right?
I would think Lead Actor (either gender) would be the most impressive Tony. I’m totally ignorant of the stage, though; are directors a thing for plays?
Oscar: Movies
Emmy: TV
Grammy: Music
Tony: Stage / Theater
Sorry
I’ve led you astray. Orig and adapted scripts are OSCAR categories.
The Tony would be Best Play. Which is quite impressive, but lately is shared with the producer. It really should be split into 2 awards.
Seem to me directing partakes of some of the skills of acting and playwriting (and to some degree, producing an album) Make the Oscar for something, like costume design or cinematography, that is completely different from music, acting or scriptwriting. That would be more impressive.
