Which leads to a question which perhaps should have its own thread: How short a term could Pence have and still “count” as 46th president?
If Donnie drops dead in 2020, surely Pence’s time in office would count since it would be on a par with Tippecanoe. But suppose it’s Jan 18 and the same thing happens- would two days of being president earn him the title of #46? Still say yes? Well how about if the same thing happens at 11 am on Jan 20- would an hour count as being the 46th? If that isn’t too short to count, what is? Five minutes? One minute? Ten seconds?
For what it’s worth, I think anything under a day shouldn’t count.
I think that’s too fine a point, personally. Pence wouldn’t have even had a heartbeat as president in that time. Seems to me that you should at least have the opportunity to do something as president before being counted as one.
Given the current national emergency, they threaten to cause practical fallout that could damage Biden’s incoming White House not just in a political sense. There are increasing concerns that Trump’s obstruction will slow and complicate the delivery of the vaccine that brings the tantalizing prospect of a return to normal life amid stunning news from trials showing doses are effective in stopping more than 90% of coronavirus infections…The distribution operation will be a massively complex and historic public vaccination effort targeting hundreds of millions of Americans – many millions of whom have resisted following basic safety protocols like wearing masks because Trump has encouraged them not to. The inoculation campaign will require a high level of public trust and will involve sharp ethical debates among officials about who should get the vaccine first. The entire program could be damaged if it is politicized. But unless something changes, the Biden team may face the task of tackling those issues afresh, in a frantic catch-up operation.
Wisconsin has finished their offical vote tally, and Biden’s margin of victory increased slightly (+181 votes) compared to the initial tally, giving him a margin of 20,608 votes.
Trump’s campaign is now on the clock to request a recount by 5pm tomorrow.
I think if he was sworn in, it would probably count. If there wasn’t time for swearing in before Biden was sworn in, then I think it would be referred to as, “technically, Pence was president for 30 seconds between when Trump was pronounced and noon, but no one treats him as having been president.”
Think it would be technically true for any amount of time. But for people to count it as anything other than a technicality, it would need to be for an appreciable amount of time, after being sworn in. Like, was he actually in charge of nuclear launch codes? Hours, yes. 30 minutes? Maybe. Less than 15 minutes? Probably not. “Technically” only.
The chaos inside the campaign parallels the president’s ongoing efforts in court, which have been met with increasingly frustrated judges around the country.
“At what point does this get ridiculous?” said one exasperated judge, an appointee of President Barack Obama, before ruling against the Republicans in Nevada.
