WaPo is useless.
Just heard (on local NBC news) that Wisconsin cast its 10 votes for Biden.
I’d read they were going to wait til one for that, but maybe everything went quicker than expected? (Or they did it to throw off the ProudBoys, who planned their coup for 12:58…)
That’s what the NY Times is showing.
Works fine for me.
You bought a sub?
No. I had no problem loading the page.
Specifically, it is paywalled. Works fine for subscribers, useless for everyone else.

I usually have that issue, but that particular page loaded fine for me. Maybe they didn’t paywall that particular page.

Georgia and Arizona have now cast their electoral votes for Biden.
Not so fast! According to WaPo reporter Michelle Ye Hee Lee on Twitter:
Meanwhile, in another part of the GA State Capitol, 16 GOP electors cast ballots for Trump, declaring that “the contest of the election is ongoing.”
There is even a picture, showing 16 Republican lunatics crowded together, maskless, in a small room, acting out a sort of skit in which they’re casting pretend votes for Trump.
Something may come out of this – namely, 16 more COVID cases in Georgia.
They did. Which is why I sad that. However, after a bit you can get some free views again.

So it’s not “useless.”

This isn’t as harmless as you might assume. At the joint session of Congress to count the electors, the session is required to consider certificates of election from states as well as, “any documents purporting to be certificates of election.” The rules also require that the state-validated certificates must be the ones that are counted, but the mere fact that Republicans will be able to point to two separate sets of electors for Georgia will turn it into even more of a circus.

Who is going to send these pretend votes to Congress? Some traitor GOP official, I guess, but I thought it had to come from the governor.
I think I made a comment to that effect in one of these threads. It’s not that people blame Trump for COVID happening or even that COVID was bad; he simply didn’t show enough empathy at a time when conservative-leaning independents wanted to see it. That is what cost him the election.
When he first started having his pressers - before he went totally apeshit and advised drinking bleach - he had some of his highest poll numbers, just months after surviving impeachment. All he had to do was to pretend like he cared. Instead he made COVID a political statement, and worst of all, he made defiance a political statement.
If Trump had been smarter, he would have fought like hell against shutdowns - that would have worked big in his favor. He could have fought the Democratic mayors and governors on shutdowns and he could have been otherwise indifferent on mask wearing and protective measures. But his campaign became an exercise in total denialism, and that’s what cost him.
Had he used a more targeted attack against the shutdowns only, I think he would have beaten Biden in an electoral college squeaker.

It’s not that people blame Trump for COVID happening or even that COVID was bad;
I do. Deaths would have been much lower under a sane scientific policy.
One good thing, with all these court challenges, trump has now lost more often than Harold Stassen.

Maybe it’s come up in this marathon threads, but that’s a good question. How, specifically, are these votes/ballots delivered to Washington? I know they’re ceremoniously pulled out of some wooden box to be read by the VP in January - but is there a special envelop they need to be sent in Something fancy like that?
The electors in each state send one of their certified copies of the vote to the attention of the President of the Senate (ie Mike Pence), by registered mail.
See 3 US Code § 11:
The electors shall dispose of the certificates so made by them and the lists attached thereto in the following manner:
First. They shall forthwith forward by registered mail one of the same to the President of the Senate at the seat of government.
Second. Two of the same shall be delivered to the secretary of state of the State, one of which shall be held subject to the order of the President of the Senate, the other to be preserved by him for one year and shall be a part of the public records of his office and shall be open to public inspection.
Third. On the day thereafter they shall forward by registered mail two of such certificates and lists to the Archivist of the United States at the seat of government, one of which shall be held subject to the order of the President of the Senate. The other shall be preserved by the Archivist of the United States for one year and shall be a part of the public records of his office and shall be open to public inspection.
Fourth. They shall forthwith cause the other of the certificates and lists to be delivered to the judge of the district in which the electors shall have assembled.
Nice - thank you. Seems like a good amount of redundancy, backing up, and making sure there are multiple copies out there.

The certificates of election are sent to the President of the Senate (i.e. the Vice President), who presides over the joint session of Congress. Under the Electoral Count Act, at the joint session he is required to open all certificates or “documents purporting to be certificates” he has received for each state. Presumably, these renegade electors will send some sort of “certificate” that they claim to be the actual certificate of electors for Georgia. Of course, it will lack the state seal, Governor’s signature and other verifiers required by the act. But Pence will be required to open it (and will also have every political incentive to do so)
Now the statute is also clear that the electors certified by the relevant state authority prior to the Safe Harbor date MUST be considered the valid electors for that state. So there’s no chance of these renegade electors actually being counted. But it will muddy things up and give Republicans more ammunition for making a mockery of the process.
