Elite Dangerous

Really liking the new system jumps. Much smoother transitions.

4 mil for a sightseeing tour. Not bad.

Think I’ll take the DBX out of mothballs and spend the holiday weekend transporting one of those wealthy explorers.

I transported a nervous, secretive explorer out to an earthlike planet 3kly from Sol. On arrival at the system, I noted the presence of other NPC ships around, so I hit Silent Running so we wouldn’t get scanned. Unfortunately, I then crashed into the tourist beacon, with my shields down, lost 25% hull and he quit on me.
No 6 million credits for me!

I’ve been seeing explorers who want to go to Jacques, another one bound for Sag A, and third paying over 100 mil for a trip of ~30 ly each way.

Most likely cruise ships, which are too busy with their own passengers to bother scanning anyone.

Took on one of those Explorer contracts. 10 mil for five first-class seats, 6K each way. Just 1K out from Sol and already seeing systems with no name attached.

I had some kind of driver issue with this game a while back and it wouldn’t run on my game machine, so I hadn’t touched it much since it came out. I remember I was kind of trapped in a little galactic cul-de-sac, where the only path out was a jump that was too far for my unupgraded ship to make, so I was stuck trying to trade commodities between about 5 stations to make enough to upgrade my way out of there. That’s probably the other reason why I didn’t bother with the game.

Last weekend a Windows 10 auto-update decided to barf all over itself, so I had to reinstall everything from scratch. This gave me the chance to track down the driver that was causing problems (I think it was my logitech webcam driver).

Holy moley.

First thing I noticed was that I could get out of the system via more routes. Or I didn’t notice the routes before? Whichever, I’m happy. Also, there are way, way more jobs available, for more money. No more hauling 4 units of biowaste for 320 space bucks of profit, minus the 100 for fuel, and the high probability of being interdicted by a pirate and if not getting killed outright, at least taking enough damage to erase any money made on that trip.

I’ve probably put 10 hour in in the past 5 days, been able to significantly upgrade my ship, and been able to travel around far enough to make some money on exploration in addition to delivery missions. Tons of fun.

Totally random little cool detail - I didn’t realize at first, but when approaching a station the station greeting was calling out “bravo india golf”. My pilot’s name is “Big McLargehuge”. It took a couple of times to connect the two. Also different stations have different voices now. The snippy Irish woman was hilarious when I accidentally bumped into a ship when taking off from my docking port.

I just got this game for my birthday. If anyone wants to give a newbie who hasn’t even downloaded it some very rudimentary starting advice in bullet point format, please do so.

What or whom is Mobius? Why do I have to ask Mobius to do PVE?

Mobius PVE* is the private group in which you’ll find most (all?) of us from the board. Mobius is its administrator and you need to send him a message for an invite.

*It used to be just plain Mobius (all private groups are named after the creator/administrator) but grew too big for the game to handle effectively so had to be split between hemispheres. So now there are Mobius and Mobius PVE.

Meant to include the original Mobius group with that.

The second training mission is driving me insane.

“Okay, drop out of frameshift!” So I do, every time in the blue zone.

“You made it1” I am always about nine kilometres fro mthe station, and it tells me to use E to contact the controller.

E doesn’t work. A few moments later, “Looks like you dropped out too soon.” Which I didn’t. So I fly away, engage the framerate drive, go around, do it again, same result, again and again. No matter what I do I drop out about 9 KM from the station, the guy says I made it, and then twenty seconds later changes his mind.

WTF?

That is weird. To contact a station controller, you need to open your Navigation panel (1 on PC keyboard or activate Headlook and look left) and tab over to Contacts. The station is nearly always the first one on the list.

Note: you need to be within 7.5 km to request docking.

The station allowed me to approach, accepting my request, and assigned a landing spot, but the training mission kept telling me to engage my frameshift drive to try again. I entered the station and tried to land, but the landing gear would not deploy. The training mission simply would not accept that I had successfully entered the station.

Guess you’ll have to skip that one, then.

I get the feeling the tutorial missions don’t get much QA. When the game first came out, the training mission on using the frameshift drive to go from one system to another was buggy, and you’d never drop back out of warp*.

Only at that point I’d never done it before so I had no idea how long to expect to get to another system. I actually left it for about 15 minutes (I got up and made lunch) before figuring it was broken.

  • Frame shift, FTL, warp, ludicrous speed, whatever.

Well I’m pretty good at docking. I don’t find it hard. I do want a joystick, though, a thrust control mapped to a thumb control will make that process faster.

Combat I’m worthless; the firing group control is sketchy and my ship doesn’t pitch for shit.

So I’m Senoje, in Mobius PVE. The missions look dangerous as hell, all of them. What’s a good newbie mission to introduce me to the process and to the local systems?

Stick with missions that pay you for moving goods or people from one place to another for now; use trading tools like Thrudd’s and/or EDDB to fill the rest of your cargo racks. You should be fine as long as you don’t take any missions above your current levels.

Oh, and until you can afford something capable of defending itself, it’s usually best to submit to interdiction by throttling completely down. Alternatively, start looking for a signal source that resolves to Convoy Dispersal Pattern as soon as a pirate announces they’re coming after you and drop into that; the pirate will typically follow and be swarmed the moment you are fired upon.

In both cases, immediately boost away from any attackers until you’re able to engage FSD again.
