Ellen DeGeneres Greeting Cards

Not sure if this is Threadworthy but I sure thought it was odd.

I needed to buy a few greeting cards this past weekend. Hey, did you know that Hallmark makes lots and lots of cards that play music and other recordings now? Did you know that customers who browse these cards tend to open/try-out lots and lots of them?

Did you know how quickly these cards can get on your last nerve when you are trying to find just the right sympathy card?

But the singing, rocking, wise-cracking Hallmark cards are not what I found odd. Because it was not at the Hallmark store that I discovered… Ellen DeGeneres greeting cards. Apparently they came out sometime in July. (Degeneres herself, of course, came out several years ago now. Ba-dump-bump.)

There was an entire section of these cards. A small section, to be sure, but a section. The few of them I looked at contained very standard greeting card humor… with the twist that it was conveyed to you, the reader, by a wide-eyed, grinning Ellen DeGeneres caricature.

I probably like Ellen DeGeneres as much as the next guy, but this is just… strange. I don’t think there’s ever been a celebrity for whom I’ve had the sort of fondness that made me think “I wish there was an disturbing cartoon version of this person on the front of every greeting card I buy.” Maybe Jane Leeves. Nah, not even Jane Leeves.

(Note that just because I don’t want a freaky cartoon Jane Leeves on my card purchases and she won’t return my phone calls don’t mean I don’t love her.)

Maybe Snoopy and Tweety-bird are asking for too much money to sell cornball greeting card shtick these days, or something.

Weird.

You may like her as much as the next guy, but there are scads of women out there who LOVE Ellen DeGeneres, my wife being one of them. She Tivos her talk show and watches it every evening. I don’t know if that translates into greeting cards per se, but she has a extremely loyal fanbase at the moment.

I thought those cards were somewhat surreal myself. I think I would have been less perplexed by a line of Oprah cards.

You used the wrong word. Detest would be mild for me.

I’d buy 'em. But not for my dad. He hates “Ellen DeGenerate”.

The problem with these cards for me is not having a celebrity cartooned on them, it’s that they are completely lame and un-funny (and I do find Ellen DeGeneres funny). Next!

Yeah, Featherlou, right behind ya… I like Ellen Degeneres, and her show, and i’m not much a fan of talk shows these days. I saw the Ellen cards, “Well, hmm, those might be good…” and read a few on the racks at the drugstore. Bleah, very bland and not true to Ellen’s humor. Just licensed out to so-so writers, I guess. Coulda been good, though.

Hmmmmm, I looked at the caracature of Ellen, and thought, “Why are they using a picture of Samantha Brown (Passport to Europe).” Damn, I never noticed the resemblance before.

I like her, and I think her show is the best daytime talk show on the air.

However, her cards are lame.

Then again, it is not like she is the first celebrity to market other things/products using her name.

Anybody buying Paris Hilton’s line of products, or any of the rap star’s lines of clothing, or David Hasselhoff’s CD’s?
