Ellen is funny.

Is she really that awkward?
Peace,
mangeorge

Awkward and not funny, occasionally a little amusing.

DeGeneres?

Thanks for noticing.

I think she is pretty funny.

She has her moments, but I find it all a bit forced. Now Paula Poundstone is really funny…

Funny ha-ha or funny…nevermind.

I haven’t seen much of her talk show but I’ve seen clips and I always find her cute and endearing. I watched her sitcom when it was on.

My girlfriend met her in real life: The owner of the store she managed came in with Ellen to show her (Ellen) around the store and just generally show off a bit. Ellen was very cold and not very friendly. The girlfriend was disappointed, because she’d always been a fan. Portia di Rossi was there, too, and was very nice; quirkier and more awkward than Ellen. Neither of them were much like their television personas. That’s why the call it acting, I guess.

She’s human, she can’t be expected to be upbeat and bouncy all the time. Though I would’ve expected it in a situation like that.

Actually, she’s made of a large colony of ants who decided to invade our culture by all grouping up together to make an Ellen-shaped mass. If you piss her off she turns into a giant fist and punches you.

One of my favorite sitcom moments is from her comedy show when someone (her mom?) enters her apartment and she steps out of the hall closet.
Nothing on the show was said about it and a lot of viewers didn’t even notice.

Okay, that’s pretty funny.

I fist saw her as a standup on one of those cable comedy shows (Evening at the Improv?) int he early 90’s (she had long hair even!). She was an absolutely hysterical standup- at least the one I saw. It was one of the funniest standup routines I had seen in a long time.

The show was OK, but I was disappointed that it never lived up to her standup routine.

I’ve actually only ever seen her talk show once or twice. But as a Stand-Up Comic, I loved her.

Having a staff of writers come up with a new monologue five days a week is tough even for the best of the best, so when I’ve heard people express little enthusiasm for the talk show I’ve never really paid much mind. When I think of Ellen DeGeneres, I don’t think about her talk show, or even of either of her sitcoms, I think of her Stand-Up, and as a Stand-Up she was great.

Trying to find video of her hosting the 2001 Emmys, not having any luck. The Awards ceremony had been twice delayed after 9/11 and the initial invasion of Afghanistan, and it was the first major awards show to follow the attack, IIRC. So many thought hosting duties to be a near impossible task under those circumstances, Ellen did a great job, kicking the night off with a very funny, yet relevant, opening monologue.

Her standup was hysterical, i never watched her talk show or sitcom.

I remember that. She did a few standups, on PBS iirc. Wasn’t one “Comedy tonight”?
Her “Ellen” show had some moments that reflected her standup talent. The “toaster” scene was pretty funny too.

I honestly can’t think of many comedians who are even mildly funny in real life (except maybe Eddie Izzard). Sad clown isn’t just a cliché. It must be so draining.

Yes, Ellen is funny. Very funny. And I’m a straight old white guy.

Is she the funniest? No.
Do I laugh 'til my sides hurt? No.
Is she consistently funny without being crude or needing to resort to meanness? Yes.

Her TV show was lightly funny until near the end. Her stand up on HBO was solid. The few times I’ve seen her talk show it looked OK, for day time talk. Her American Express commercials are comic gems in my opinion.

Me too. I like Ellen. She seems pleasant and sincere for the most part.

Now my brother…
~sigh~ he won’t let his daughter watch the Ellen show [whispering]because she’s a lesbian[/whispering]!
