Embarrassing admission -- do YOU do this?

Margaret Atwood? is that you?

Nah…if I were, I would have spelled it “enamoured”…

It can be discouraging when you churn out a real rib-tickler of a response, and log it in, and see the thread roll on with nobody at all even referring in passing to your gem, or you.

And let’s face it, we all do it for acknowledgement. For validation that our opinion is apt, our wit sharp, our aim true. And it hardly ever comes.

Not because we’re not doing it right, but because this is the Big City and there’s not much room for “me too” posts.

I frequently start posts in support of something funny I’ve read, and then stop and delete, because it’s boring reading.

So my opinion is you have to supply your own evaluation of how good your contribution is. As in all forms of work, we have to seek our reward in ourselves, rather than in others around us. Only way to keep our sanity when you think of the people who get promoted to supervisory positions, or the poor taste of the general public.

So that’s what Jess and the rest of us are doing when we do that little inventory thing.

Checking to see that we really were funny. And with a few exceptions I think we were and are. That’s why I’m here, anyway.

Redboss

I’ve done it before just to see if anyone was talking about me.

Redboss, this made me think of my mother and laugh. Whenever my sister and I would complain or whine or generally be selfish little brats, my mother would just look at us and shrug and say,

“that’s life in the big city”

The thing was…we didn’t live in the big city. But it always shut us up

jarbaby

No, I don’t do that. At least, I didn’t before you mentioned it. Now I’m going to have to go do it! Ahhh, more time wasting stuff to do…

OF COURSE I do it. I check “My eBay” too. Same thing.

Until I got tired of running across references to sexual DRY spells.

[sub]which isn’t really why I chose the username but might as well be[/sub]

OK, nothing to add here (yes I do a search on my username to see if others are talking about me behind my back!)… but I gotta see if Mephisto was telling the truth or lying to us!!

I’ve never done that. I just post and move on. There have been a few times that I’ve searched for something I wrote earlier, just to make sure that I’m not repeating myself.

Also, sometimes I’ll search for something I wrote earlier, just to make sure that I’m not repeating myself.

First, “mad props” for Margaret Atwood jokes.

Second, Jess, I always open threads you start or ones where you are the last known poster. You rock.

And third, yeah, I search to see if anyone has mentioned me. And a few months ago I looked back and found my first posts on the board - I was one of those annoying newbies who starts pit threads before contributing anywhere else, but I must say they were pretty damn funny pit threads.

just keepin’ it real mags

Someone should start a “Greatest hits” thread where everyone could post what they think was their most shinning moment: that single beautiful post that you reread 18 times, overwhelmed with your own eloquence. Rules would have to be no commenting on the substance of anyone else’s greatest hits, just the style and rhetorical techniques demonstrated.

I have a couple of times, but stopped after that. I find I can’t stand most of my posts, and when I re-read them it makes me feel ridiculous. I might, later, when reading the same thread, run across my earlier post, but I always scroll down past it, therefore avoiding the searing blush that always hits me.

I think my posts are interesting enough at the time they’re written, but later sound like a twelve year old kid.

Highly embarrassing. :frowning:

Thanks, magdalene. What a sweet thing to say.

Um, I search on myself as a keyword, so I can see if anyone’s replied to a post I made, or mentioned me in any other way. I hate missing something addressed to me, and I just can’t read every thread. It’s also nice when it comes up that someone’s mentioned me in a thread like the “nicest posters” thread that was up not too long ago. I wasn’t expecting to be mentioned, and I hadn’t paid any attention to the thread until I searched for “myself”. Of course, if someone refers to me as Trouble or TA, I don’t find it that way, because they are too hard to search on. (Note, I don’t mind the shortening, just stating that I can’t search on those…) I don’t usually search on myself as a user name, though. I’m not that interested in my own posts…

Oh yeah, i search on myself as a keyword - in case anyone’s said anything to/about me. If i didn’t i would’ve missed Reprise saying something nice about something i wrote in the Pit and reading that made my day.

I always assumed this was the reason it’s traditional for poster’s names to be bolded when mentioned - so that if they’ve seen that their name is mentioned they can find it quickly.

I do know what you mean about thinking you’re funny when no one else seems to. A while ago i was posting about how i’m scared of bees and the topic veered off into a tangent about how we should shave the bees so i wouldn’t be scared by all that fuzziness (Redboss that was your suggestion i think? That cracked me up). Anyway, i mentioned how bald bees would then look like miniture flying versions of those horrible hairless rat-things that live underground. I think this is one of the funniest things i’ve ever imagined but no one seems to agree with me. Probably because they can’t see the pictures in my head. sigh

Well I just did it for the first time (thanks to this thread) and all it did was make me realize just how many threads I’ve killed… uuuggghhh Don’t think I will be doing that again anytime soon.

What’s so embarrassing about it anyway? I don’t see it as egotistical; rather, it shows concern for others to keep up dialogue with them.

Callie, poor dear, poor poor widdle-ums. We all suffer from the threadkiller syndrome. Here, let me post this so you won’t be left holding the bag.

That’s very kind of you,Jomo Mojo to be the thread killer by being the last one…

Oh.
