My online friend is facing the possible complete loss of her left eye. Apparently this is due to a kid shooting her with a pellet gun awhile back. Her words were along the lines of “I’m looking at wearing an eyepatch.”
So (with her permission) I’m asking if anybody on the board has gone through this or knows someone who has.
Unfortunately I don’t know much more about her situation, except that she is already having severe vision problems in the eye.
sits back and waits for someone to say “It’s all fun and games until…”
There are lots of funny/mean things to say here… but I (for the first time in my ENTIRE life) am gonna take the high road. I know of a lot of REALLY horriffic eye iunjuries where the eye has been saved… maybe not functioning as well as one would like… but still THERE… There have been a TON of medical advances in this field… and I hope a few of those advances will help your friend keep her eye… good wishes, thoughts and prayers…
and tell the kid “careful where you point that thing, you could…” never mind
I had a coworker who had a glass eye. She had a pretty laid-back attitude about it. In fact, she kept earlier “versions” of her glass eye, glue-gunned the fake eyes to a leather strap, and wore it as a bracelet!
Also, my dad lost the vision in one of his eyes at age 6. He had to overcompensate for it sometimes (crane his neck around A LOT to see the blind spot when driving) but he did just fine. He worked for the Post Office, drove a jeep, and passed the Post Office’s driving test with flying colors.
Maybe some-one should say the ‘mean’ things; I’ve known two people who lost obvious body-parts (as opposed to a spleen or gall-bladder) who LOVE the jokes
I’ll just second verbenabeast. I came within a millimeter or so of losing one of mine a whole lotta years back, and despite that still have 20/20 vision*, with no expensive surgeries, miracle cures, or mechanical aids involved.
Depending on the outcome for your mate, if things don’t go 100%there’s
Losing some vision is better than losing it all
Keeping your eye beats wearing a glass eye, and the other one still works just fine
Glass eyes are whole lot more comfortable and natural looking now than they were once upon a time
As Q.E.D. said, not dying is always a plus
Sorry to hear it, in any case. Even if you know you’re not losing a significant portion of your visual acuity, wearing an eyepatch for any length of time can be a real bitch. In my case, when the bandage was on good and tight and held the eyelid closed, it was alright, but when it loosened up even a little, my eyelashes kept dragging on it with every little movement, and it drove me straight up a wall.
*[sub]This may not be quite true anymore, but I think it’s got a lot more to do with my age and habits (staring at a monitor for hours at a rip every day) than the injury.[/sub]
I lost the use of my left eye about a year ago due to diabeties. I consider myself lucky that my retinal surgeon was able to save the right. In fact, I have 20/40 vision in that eye, correctable to 20/20.
It’s not that bad a handicap to deal with. I do have to be extra careful when driving. I really hate changing lanes to the left.
It also depresses me a little that I won’t be able to see the new Spy Kids 3-d movie the right way.
I have trouble playing volleyball and badmitten because I can’t judge the distances very well and I can’t juggle anymore (yes, I used to juggle quite well). I do know that some people are able to train themselves to do these things with this handicap.
I don’t wear an eyepatch, but you can tell something is wrong with the eye. My dad was looking into getting an artifical one, apparently one of the best doctors for that lives in the same town he does.
Bottom line is that it’s annoying, but it’s not horrible. If she does lose the use of the eye, she can live a perfectly normal life.
My mother recently had to have one of her eyes removed and replaced with a prosthesis. She’s been blind in that eye for a couple of years (retinal detachment, amongst other things) and the complications from it were starting to affect her good eye. (I don’t understand the details.) She’s bounced back from the surgery pretty well and seems to have a lot more energy.

Sorry to bump the thread but I do want to thank everybody for the kind words and encouragement, and I’m going to show my friend the thread if she’s feeling in the right mood.
Odinoneye, I’m glad you are doing so well.
Red Rider? That wouldn’t be a Christmas Story joke, would it?
As for legal issues I don’t know what she’s doing about that, it will probably depend on what happens medically and whether this kid is some kind of relative.
