With all the personality tests popping up in MPSIMS, I wondered how many of you have heard of enneagrams. I know okatym and some other posters talked about it some here.
Here’s an enneagram test to see what your personality type is. It’s a sampler of a test produced by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson. They wrote Personality Types, which I heartily recommend.
Since I started it, I should say what my personality type is, I guess.
I’m an Artist. The Riso/Hudson book talks about “wing” types, which are types that are next to one’s main type that also influence them. That said, I have a Thinker “wing”.
My mom (who, with a psych degree AND a card-carrying New Ager, is… um… formidable ), is a great proponent of the Enneagram and considers it to be a great predictor of future actions. I am rather less convinced of its validity, but then every book on the Enneagram I’ve read makes the various types sound like raving psychotics. FWIW, she claims I’m mostly a 1, while this test says I’m mostly type 5. Dunno. Take it with whatever dosage of salt you find it requires…
I scored an 8 in Type 5: The Thinker, 5 each in Type 3: The Motivator, Type 4: The Artist, Type 6: The Skeptic, and Type 9: The Peacemaker, 3 each in Type 1: The Reformer and Type 8: The Leader, a 2 in Type 7: The Generalist, and a big fat zero in Type 2: The Helper.
Actually, that sounds a lot like me…
God is dead. -Nietzsche
Nietzsche is dead. -God
Neitzsche is God. -Dead
All these test sites that have suddenly appeared here… what’s the point of them? How are we improved by knowing what category we should be forced under?
I don’t take it seriously, either, but I always found stuff like this to be fun. I mean, I know what my personality’s like, I know about how smart I am, and I definitely am aware of my “impurity”, but it’s interesting to see it confirmed. It’s also interesting when you know it’s waaaaaay the hell off. Besides, it’s a great way for people who, for the most part, exist to each other only as words on screens to get to know each other better.

Am I the only one who got negative scores in most of the sections? I got a 5 in the Thinker, a 3 in the 1st section (can’t remember what it is), and most of everything else was in the -1 to -3 range, except for a big fat -7 in the Helper.
Type 1: The Reformer. The rational, idealistic type. Score : 3
Type 2: The Helper. The caring, nurturing type. Score : 7
Type 3: The Motivator. The adaptable, success-oriented type. Score : 3
Type 4: The Artist. The intuitive, reserved type. Score : 4
Type 5: The Thinker. The perceptive, cerebral type. Score : 3
Type 6: The Skeptic. The committed, security-oriented type. Score : 6
Type 7: The Generalist. The enthusiastic, productive type. Score : 3
Type 8: The Leader. The powerful, aggressive type. Score : 0
Type 9: The Peacemaker. The easygoing, accommodating type. Score : 6
The one about the helper is definately true. But was anyone else annoyed/disturbed by question #28: I tend to be a) Detached and preoccupied. B) Moody and self absorbed.
Ummm, wouldn’t anyone with any self preservation skills ( Or at least some ounce of intelligence answer A or nothing at all?)
As for the Improved Test Here’s the results and I’m not sure, but I think the indications are that I’m going postal soon. You be the judge:
I think the test is just intended as a starting point, Sanibel. You should probably read some of the other pages at the site to get a better idea of what type you are.
The thing I like about the enneagram system (theory?) is that it doesn’t say one type is better than another. There are different levels of health/unhealth within each type. Granted, I got most of what I know from the aforementioned book, and the website probably doesn’t go into as much detail.
