Anyone else need a sponsorship?
I could use one… I was a starving graduate student that Reepicheep was kind enough to sign up last year, and since I’m a graduate student I’m afraid that I’m still starving this year.
(Although I finished my comps, so now I’ve upgraded from beans to tuna fish.

I was reading the “Sponsor My Membership” thread in the About This Message Board forum, but since my membership expired quite some time ago, I can’t post my request in that thread. I always figured I’d be able to come up with the money to re-subscribe, but no matter how hard I try to scrape up the money, something else always seems to come up.
If there is someone that would be willing to sponser my membership, I would really appreciate it. If not, that’s OK to.

My husband, gaffa , could use one. I’ve been a member for years, and I’m paid up until next year, but he’s just now dipping his toes into the SDMB. As evidenced by my ‘looking for a job’ thread in MPSIMS, neither one of us is doing too well financially at the moment. I’m sure I can pay it forward in the future.

I just renewed my subscription, and decided to stop by this thread to see if anyone else needed one. I was all set to pay for gaffa, but I can’t follow Jim’s excellent instructions from page 1, since (having renewed) I’m now paid up for more than 12 months. Is there any other way to pay for someone?
The EXACT same thing just happened to me.
I guess we have to wait until our subscriptions run to under a year, and then (I assume) the “order” button option will be available.
Or get a sock (with permission) and pay for someone, then delete said sock.

You can still subscribe someone else. Go to User CP and click on the Subscribe button. Follow the steps, hitting the Pay By Credit Card button. At that point, substitute your target’s ID number in the url for yours. Simple as that.
A few people have complained of this – they’ve resubscribed for themselves and then tried to subscribe someone else and not been able to get it to go through.
There is a time limit on the board – if you have more than one year to go on your subscription you can’t add more time. Apparently you can’t add more time for other people.
Once it drops below 365 days you’re good to go again.

silenus - That’s the part that’s not available when you have more than a year’s subscription paid up. The button is gone on the subscribe page. Thanks for trying, though.
The work-around is to PM the person in question, get their password, log on as them and use your credit card to resubscribe them. Then they just change their password and everybody’s happy.
There is another work around. He is covered.
What is it?
Have somebody else pay for it that hasn’t renewed lately. 
You should be able to pay anyone’s sub, regardless of your own subscription’s status. Just copy the following URL:
And paste it into your browser’s address bar. DON’T PRESS ENTER YET. Change the XXXXX to the user’s member ID. NOW press enter. This way, the system never sees your subscription info which ought to allow you to bypass the one-year restriction when paying for someone else.

I’ve had people report this hasn’t worked properly for them, hence the request for a workaround.
