Enterprise Revamped

Last season, Manny Coto, a new writer to Enterprise, was made a co-executive producer to the series and will be taking over a lot of Brannon Braga’s day to day duties. Most long-time fans cheered at this idea as Braga’s considered to be a bit of a hack (he had nothing to do with the Golden Age of TOS, obviously, and very little at all to do with the Silver Age of TNG/DS9 but has been a key player in whatever the current age would be considered) and starting sometime in the next couple of episodes, Coto’s presence will be felt more strongly as he tries to finish off what he was given to start anew.

One of things that he is rumored to be doing is a remake of the opening montage, replacing “Faith of the Heart” with a more traditional voice-over and the history of spaceflight with a flyby montage reminiscent of TOS and TNG.

The video of which can be seen here.

I myself am not overly fond of this idea although I realize I am most likely in the distinct minority. I can handle minor tweaks and overhauls but to change something it to something so different after three seasons and, hopefully, halfway through its run is just too much. While they’re at it, why not just give them the ringship shown in the wall on TMP and throw them into the uniforms seen in “The Cage”? For good or bad, Enterprise has its own distinct look and sound and to change it so drastically now shows very little respect towards it.

In my opinion, of course.

Anyway, what does everyone else think? Would you welcome the change or would you prefer it to stay the same?

And please, if you’re going to come in here only to trash the show, say that the show, let alone its opening sequence, deserves no respect, or something else equally inflammatory, please keep it to yourself.

I wouldn’t mind them ditching the current theme song, but I’d pass on the voice over.

I did like the quick resolution of the Xindi arc.

I expect a high level of ham to accompany Brent Spiner’s 3-story arc, though. I like him, mind you, but he can go overboard sometimes.

I’m not entirely opposed to the new opening sequence, but dammit! those are Capt. James T. Kirk’s words and they always will be. If they want to do a voiceover, it needs to be different, and appropriate within the historical context they use to write the episodes. I could get used to the new opening scenes.

Vlad/Igor

Cool.

It would work if it also matches a change in the story - i.e. they come closer to becoming the Federation, and return to discovering some of the races that we’re already familiar with - i.e. true prequel stuff.

One of my biggest gripes about Enterprise is how they encounter all these alien races that we’ve never seen in the other series, which just doesn’t make sense in context. I want true Origin stories, please. And the true conflicts and situations that cause the Directives to need to be developed.

My other big gripe is how blatant they are about getting T’Pol in as tiny and tight a costume as they can each week. Many geeks are happy about this, and believe me I certainly can appreciate the view myself, but it’s just inappropriate and sexist that it rubs me the wrong way.

Trip and the Cogenitor?

She can’t be in Starfleet unifrom, since Spock is the first Vulcan to serve. I’d like to see her in uniform without insignia be she an observer, guest of the Captain or whatever.

I think changing the opening credits is a great idea, although I don’t really like Enterprise, so that’s not surprising. Even if I were, though, I still would think it was a good idea. I loved how Babylon 5 changed their opening credits every season to reflect the gradual darkening of the series. (I got chills the first time I saw the opening that went something like, “Babylon 5 was our last, best hope for peace. It failed.”)

I always wanted to like the show, though, and if Braga is as responsible for the show’s quality as everyone says, I might give it another chance now that he’s not in control. What’s the scoop on the new guy? What else has he written?

They were also dead Spock’s words.
I would like to see Majel have a go at a voice over montage. That way, she would have been involved in one way or another with every single incarnation of Trek.

Well, I watched most of the first season, didn’t think much of it. I was hoping it would get better but it never did. I hate the opening sequence and that soppy song. I didn’t go back for the second season.

Sorry if that sounds inflamatory.

Now, if they’ve got someone new in charge, and ditched the opening, I’ll give it another try.

Hm. Well, I’m all for getting rid of the current theme, and I have no inherent problem with people other than Kirk giving the “Space… The Final Frontier” speech. I also don’t have much problem with Scott Bakula as an actor. But something about the way he delivers those lines… it just doesn’t work. At all.

A while back some fan redubbed the opening sequence with music pulled from the ST:Generations theme. A few timing tweaks and it would have worked very well.

No. Inflammatory is “I can’t believe you idiots watch that crap. It’s the worst show EVER”.

A bit exaggerated but we usually get at least one person or more dropping in to tell us just how stupid we are for liking the show and it gets a bit tiring after a while.

But then, Kirk did say, “All those desiring to live in Trekkie devotion will be persecuted. Because, what does God need with a star ship?”

It’s in 1st Pillar 3:9.

Didn’t they show Z. Cochrane giving a speech with almost identical wording in “Broken Bow”, the premiere?

I’ve never been fond of the “Faith of the Heart” intro.

I like the new intro, but will agree that Bakula’s voiceover is weak.

Still, I’d prefer the weak voiceover over the weak rendition of “Faith of the Heart”.

I don’t know… the more I listen to it…

Still… if they’re going to use those words, they have to be spoken by the captain…

Just get Bakula some coaching.

His timing is all off… he’s emphasizing the wrong places…

Oh well

Meh. I’d like them to keep the montage, but get rid of the song. The clip was kinda dull. At least it doesn’t have that godawful song-- but it’s still awfully snoozy.

Yeah, the intro is better, but I agree the voice over is weak. He needs to be more … I dunno … BOLD, I guess.

NO: “These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise … [soft pause]”

YES: “These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. [PERIOD.]”

NO: “to explore strange new worlds? [Question mark]” Perhaps he’s not sure if this is part of the mission.

YES: “to explore strange new worlds, [Hard Pause]”

NO: “[Soft Whispery Voice as if tucking-in a child] to boldly go where no human has gone before.”

YES: “[BOLDLY] to boldly go where no human has gone before.” Yes, we go BOLDLY, DAMMIT!

The previous opening-credits montage-and-song was like having all of the rustiest tools in the toolbox shoved simultaneously into my urethra.

The apparently new opening-credits montage-and-music is like a toolbox without a single thing in it.

So, no urethra-shoving, but not much else either.

—shrug—

I usually flip channels through the opening credits anyway.

Or fast forward since I’m usually recording it.

It is way better than what they have been using. I like the reading. It is like he is finding his place. I don’t want him as bold as Kirk.
