Everyday Desserts

As I was sitting here nibbling on one of my favorite desserts, I got to thinking that this would make a nice food opinion thread: What are your favorite desserts that you actually eat on a regular basis? Not complicated, expensive, super-rich death by chocolate whatsises. Things that you’re willing and able to make, and can indulge in without it having to be a special occasion. That bookmark your normal days nicely, not that you stick a candle in on your birthday.

For me, it’s dark chocolate and green tea. Sweet and rich, but not overly so of either, plus antioxidants. Yum! Tonight’s dark chocolate is a Ritter Sport bar with hazlenuts.

A “good for you” banana split.

Slice up one ripe banana in a bowl, add sliced mango/grapes/apples/peaches/plums/whatever, and top with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Mmmmmmm. Melon is good too.

I like a couple homemade chocolate chip cookies and a big glass of grapefruit juice over ice.

I’m addicted to ice cream sandwiches. Especially the generic Wal-Mart brand ones. I eat one just about every day.

Sugar free Popsicles, especially during summer. They are yummy and guilt free and refreshing. The tropical flavors are the new household favorites, especially pineapple. Yum!

Is that two separate desserts?

Dessert is one of my favorite food groups! :D[ul][li]Breyers strawberry ice cream on a stick[/li][li]Keebler Sandies (Simply Shortbread)[/li][li]peanut M&M’s[/li][li]Jell-o pudding (fat free) & gelatin (sugar free)[/li]a spoonful or two of marshmallow fluff[/ul]

Sorbet in summer. Just puree a bunch of slightly overripe fruit, add sugar, freeze and then blend.

I like to freeze fruit in the summer and eat it as it slowly thaws out.

I also like to dunk various things in Nutella. Shortbread cookies are particularly good.

We (three of us) go through a gallon of Angel Food homemade vanilla ice cream almost every week.

I eat it for dessert but I also put a spoonful in my coffee. Kills the folgers-cat piss smell.

This week was special because my daughter and I had a chocolate pie baking contest. But chocolate fudge pie is nothing without ice cream on top!

Where’s the lip-smacking smiley?

Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.

Not strictly a dessert, but I like to have a bit of cheese after dinner sometimes. Not Kraft slices, mind you, but a decent gouda or stilton or something. An ounce or two of cheese with a glass of wine while I watch Kim Possible on late-late-night TV.

Nope. It’s my idea of a single dessert. I just like the sweetness of the cookies together with the tartness of the grapefruit juice.

Fruit crumble with custard - I’m not sure how well-known the crumble is internationally; it consists of a thick layer of lightly-cooked fruit in a dish, covered with a thick layer of what is essentially a sweet shortcrust pastry recipe that has been stopped at the ‘breadcrumbs’ stage - baked in the oven until the top is… well… crumbly.

Another favourite of mine is quite similar, but instead of crumble on top of the fruit, a simple sponge cake recipe is used - again, served with custard.

The wild blackberries are more or less finished here now, but I’ve been picking them like crazy and I have about twenty pounds in the freezer, waiting to be used in one or other of the above recipes.

A scoop of frozen yoghurt, a scoop of sorbert, and a scoop of Cool Whip Lite.

Is Angel Food a brand or a flavor of ice cream that you make at home? If it’s the latter, recipe please!

I’m a sucker for ice cream, we have it at least 2-3 times a week, and I have the rear end to prove it!!!

Vanilla Ice Cream with a generous sprinkling of fresh berries.

Mmmmm

I love sorbet and sherbet, but I have never made my own.

It’s hard to beat fresh fruit, although I’m not in the habit of freezing it. Sounds great, though. I like having a little whipped cream or Cool Whip with fruit, or possibly some cheese.

I’m also a sucker for fruit cobbler, which is ridiculously easy to make.

Frozen pudding – vanilla and banana are my favorites, but chocolate works too. I usually buy cheapie instant pudding, prepare and freeze it, then eat it as it slowly thaws.

Rice Krispies Treats never get boring or bland. Damn do I love those.

My FAVORITE desserts, however, are key lime pie and cheesecake, but they are much rarer treats.

The desserts eaten most in our house are Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches, and Hoodsies.

My wife laughs at me, but one of my favorite things in the whole entire world is: cupcakes. I mean, come on! It’s cake! Cake you eat with your hand! That’s just awesome!

My favorite is strawberry with pink strawberry icing. Yes, it’s a little strange, but I like 'em.
