Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. Mike Tyson fights Friday night!

Mike Tyson fights Friday night. Who else will be watching? Mike Tyson is 58. Jake Paul is 27. Their fight is in Arlington TX.

Will you watch? What do you expect?

I remember Iron Mike Tyson in the mid and late 1980s. He was a beast. He vanquished his opponents in minutes. Sometimes seconds! He struck fear in everybody. He was incredible.

But he’s nearing 60 now. I don’t expect him to last. I know nothing about Jake Paul but I know something about aging.

Maybe Tyson needs the money. Somewhere, is Cus D’Amato rolling his eyes from his grave?

Here’s a prior thread about it, back in March-July, by DCnDC ➜

I’ll watch. It could be entertaining. Could also be a waste of time but I probably won’t have anything better to do.

I don’t really care who wins, but it would be interesting to know why Tyson feels the need for this fight. I’m sure money has a lot to do with it, but what is he trying to prove?

It’s on Netflix, right? And it’s not some special extra charge on top of the NF monthly fee, being a live event?

If both those things are true, since I have Netflix. I’ll probably watch out of vague curiosity.

Yes, Netflix. ➜

@DCnDC , I meant to put an @ for you in the OP.

I’ll be watching if I can remember.

I don’t have Netflix, so no, I will not be watching.

As to what I expect: well, it’s on Netflix, future home of WWE Raw and what used to be called pay-per-view events, so deep down, I expect the fight not to take place; instead, as Jake Paul makes his way to ringside, he is the subject of a “beatdown” by whatever the top WWE heel/“bad guys” stable is for some strange reason, leading to Paul’s appearance either on Netflix’s Raw premiere or at the Royal Rumble later in January. (He could show up for Survivor Series, but that’s a Peacock event, not Netflix.)

It’s sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation

Definitely a real fight. I don’t have Netflix.
I will watch the news.

I’ll be surprised if it goes beyond round 3.
Tyson always had a devastating punch.

They shortened the rounds to two minutes. That will help Tyson’s older legs.

There are special rules.
14-ounce gloves
8 two minute rounds

I don’t care that Tyson is 58. I still don’t want to take a punch from him.

I hope Tyson KOs Paul in the first round.

I wanted to watch this fight because the idea of Jake Paul getting his big stupid face smashed in fills me with a level of joy that I imagine must be comparable to looking your newborn child in the eyes for the first time.

However, I forgot to ask for Saturday off, so I guess I’ll catch a replay if Netflix is offering one.

Today is the weigh in. Later this afternoon.

The fight is tomorrow.

I assume someone will start a thread to follow the action as it happens. It could start with the weigh in tonight, and then follow with at least 2-3 hours of whatever they plan to have happen at 8PM tomorrow. Hopefully that follows with a brief period of time before Paul is staring at the lights.

Headlines from 32 years ago. I remember exactly where I was standing when I read that he’d lost to James “Buster” Douglas in 1990. It was shattering news, and I’m only a casual fan.

Here’s the cards:

Main card:

Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul, 8 rounds, heavyweights

Title fight: Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano, 10 rounds for Taylor’s undisputed women’s junior welterweight championship

Neeraj Goyat vs. Whindersson Nunes, 6 rounds, middleweights

Title fight: Mario Barrios vs. Abel Ramos, 12 rounds, for Barrios’ WBC welterweight title

Prelim card:

Title fight: Shadasia Green vs. Melinda Watpool, 10 rounds for the vacant WBO women’s super middleweight title

Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington vs. Dana Coolwell, 8 rounds, featherweights

Lucas Bahdi vs. Armando Casamonica, 10 rounds, lightweights

No longer have Netflix, so won’t be watching. 14 oz gloves? Much better for JP than 10 oz, but I’ve taken some pretty hard shots through 16 oz-ers - and not from anyone who can punch like Mike. I thought I saw before that headgear was also going to be allowed…

The 8 2-min rounds will definitely help Mike. As someone said upthread, I wouldn’t want to take a single shot from Mike if I were wearing a motorcycle helmet and he had his hand wrapped in a pillow.

Stupid WWE shit during the weigh in. Doesn’t bode well for the fight. Tyson looks old and slow. It’s being treated like a circus. I don’t have a good feeling about this.

And boxing is normally such a polite affair.

What time is Tyson-Paul actual fight scheduled to begin? Not the opening matches, but the big one.

It should be treated like a sport at minimum.
