I watched the entire show from a bar in SE Portland. The first fight sucked, Barrios/Ramos was pretty good, and so too were Taylor/Serano. No KOs, just judges decisions.
Tyson came out swinging but gassed out after Round 3. Paul never went after him, just danced around and scored points with jabs. This isn’t real boxing.
At one point when Tyson emerged the feed froze, and the whole bar erupted. Bartender shut everyone up, and we waited a few minutes before the feed resumed with a sped-up montage of Tyson entering the ring. Someone yelled “Benny Hill” and the whole place erupted again. The feed resumed without a glitch. That was the highlight of the evening.
Mike Tyson. For boxers under the age of 58, 48, and probably 38, I think he’s only fought two actual boxers, and I’m not sure those were sanctioned fights. My grandmother has a better chance against Canelo Alvarez than Jake Paul does, and she passed away 30 years ago.
Well, crap but thank you for next time. I was watching at my parents’ place (I don’t have NF) and struggling with it like everyone else. I finally got a stream working but didn’t know to look for a Live option so it kept playing the intro and I gave up.
Really the only halfway decent fighter he’s fought is Tommy Fury and Paul lost that one in a decision. And Tommy isn’t that good.
Very good and concise breakdown. I can act like a hipster about Tyson. I was watching him fight on Saturday afternoons before almost anyone knew him. He was always shorter than his opponent. He always had a shorter reach. And yet he could still command the ring and get in close. He had tremendous speed and torque on his short punches. That’s all gone. He had no footwork and his hands looked slow.
Paul was certainly dressed for the occasion. He was “said to be wearing shorts costing upwards of $1m (£800,000) and encrusted with nearly 400 diamonds.”
He’s not looking for legitimacy. He’s looking for a payday. And he’s very good at it. One thing you have to give him credit for, he’s a hell of a promoter.
He’s also given big paydays to those he has fought. He has shown a spotlight on the fact that the washed up MMA fighters he’s fought made more money fighting him than they ever did in their prime.
The slap during weigh in was choreographed, right? The entire promotion was well done, gotta say. And the glitches due to everyone watching….was that really happening or was it intentional? Either way, it was smart. I was awake watching, thinking it was something I wanted to see.
No it wouldn’t.
McGregor isn’t a boxer. Being a striker in MMA is not the same as being a boxer.
McGregor is 5’8” and last fought at 155lbs.
Paul is 6’1” and weighed in at around 230lbs last night.
Have women been involved in boxing/MMA long enough for there to be any 60 year old women fighters out there? I’d watch a young female content creator box a 60 year old retired fighter. Bare knuckle.
I’m thinking up more outrageous matches. They’ll all be happening if Netflix made bank on this fight, right?
Well, I said earlier this year that this fight was probably going to be completely unsatisfying, and it didn’t disappoint (or rather, it didn’t NOT disappoint). I could practically smell the commentators’ desperation; they were clearly in the tank for Tyson and unwilling to face the reality of a 58-year-old not having the hand speed, footwork, or stamina to do this anymore. As for Paul, I said it before, the obnoxious jerks who survive are the ones who have learned to protect themselves and be quick on their feet. It’s simple Darwinism. Paul knew that his opponent’s only chance was if he barreled in looking for a knockout and exposed himself, so he didn’t. Tag, move, clinch, snipe, duck and weave, keep the proper distance. He did exactly what he needed to do to dominate a one-punch geezer. No one should’ve expected anything more.
(I will say that Tyson is very handsome for his age. And a career boxer, no less!)
I don’t know. It was a spectacle. The undercards were not horrible (other than the one). And you can look at it as recognition of an athlete who had a memorable career. Gotta hand it to Jake Paul. He chose not to go for the knockout. Just so that was his choice, outa respect, and not something he contractually agreed to.
As an aside, I recently had the opportunity to smoke some Tyson 2.0 (his cannabis brand). It wasn’t bad. Wouldn’t pay extra for it, but the bowl I tried was free.
