In my lastest social experiment on a certain popular gay chat-room, I tried to see if I could get more positive attention with a thoroughly offensive profile than my geniune one. I came up with “hateful_rapist”, made his photo a cartoon angry face that I originally drew for a custom character on Freedom Force and ended his profile with “bitter, resentful guy here, hoping you all burn in hell”. Depressingly, he was a hit. My screen filled with private messages from geniuinely interested zanies. I even approached one guy who seemed interested, logged off and signed on with my real persona and was completely ignored by him, and then signed back on with hateful_rapist again and regained all his attention. I guess a hateful, raping cartoon character is more attractive than I am. Oh well…
Well, if it makes you feel better, I don’t like hateful rapists.
Once my (male) friend was in an Indian chat room, looking for people to talk to ( he was going through an indo-phile stage). Nobody seemed to care about him.
Until he came up with a new screen name: nice6indian9girl. His screen was abloom with chat invitations.
Interestingly, he still uses that as his standard instant messenger screen name, confusing the heck out of everyone and likely offending everyone else.
No, I think you need to try a different chat room.

The problem with chat rooms and IRC channels is that they are filled with 33% idiots, 33% lunatics, and 34% AFK sleeping people, who, when they wake up, may or may not fall into one of the previous two categories. The percentages vary a bit from place to place, but the personalities don’t.
As I type this, I suddenly remember that I met my wife on IRC and that the #SDMB IRC channel is cool, so I’ll remove a few bristles from my broad brush. Also there are probably some good special interest/technical chat rooms. Still, overall, it’s pretty bleak out there.
