Good morning! Spring sprung a while back here in Houston, and everything is a luscious green! Especially our front yard.
Sorry to hear about your Dad, Sticky. Crossing appendages for an easy fix!
For the first time since I started my insulin, my fasting glucose this morning was 115 - between 80-120 like they want. Woo-hoo! My A1C (a measurement of glucose levels for 3 months) was down from 7.3 to 6.6. Woo-hoo! And I’ve lost 6 pounds total – not much, but better than gaining, right?
I made a huge bread pudding with Splenda last night and brought half to work with me. The guys loved it! It’s so easy.
Life is good right now. Cross your fingers!
ETA: Glad FCD is home, Mom. With your nursing skills he should heal up super fast! Also, enjoy your time off, the best that you can!
Spring’s springing around here too. The leaves are out on many shrubs and are starting on the trees. I went to the arboretum on Friday, and the daffodils and forsythia are beautiful. No one seems to have daffodils in their yard around here so I don’t see them unless I go to the arboretum. I tried growing them last year, but the all died - daffodils, tulips, and dwarf iris. So maybe there’s a reason why no one has them here. I’ll be making return trips almost weekly for the next two months to see the lilacs, crabapples, tulips, and then eventually, the peonies and iris.
It was nice enough that I took a chance and put heartier veggies into my raised beds. I’ve got beet, carrot, and spinach/lettuce seeds started outdoors and a bell pepper seed in the house. I’m going to buy tomatoes because we want 3 and want them to be different varieties so it didn’t seem worth buying seeds.
I also put pansies into our fence baskets. I think all of that should be able to survive if/when we get a couple frosts. I just couldn’t wait any longer to get out and start growing things!
I think a big part of the emotional/mental upswing of spring is the optimism about what’s going to grow. It’s so much fun to think about summer harvests, about flowers, about what annuals to put in this year to make the yard look pretty.
We went flying yesterday. KT’s parents are “up north” for the weekend so we flew about 90 min up to where they are. The flight out was really bumpy. But the flight back was great so that made up for it. His parents took us out to dinner and had picked up a pair of meerkat earrings for me. They’re good people.

VBob, does new cube = an office shuffle at work or a whole new job?
I expect we’ll have an office shuffle before too long, even tho the head of personnel said no one is to move for at least 60 days. We’ll see how that goes, now that all the new teams are formed. I don’t want to move - I like my little corner of cubeville! I can see out a window. I’m at the end of the aisle, so passing traffic is minimal. I don’t wanna move, dammit!!
Load #5 is in the washer. A florist just delivered some flowers from FCD’s work and Taz has inspected them thoroughly. I’m still tired, but I’ve got chores to finish before considering a nap. Maybe it’ll be better to force myself to stay up, then crash early tonight. Ya think?
It’s lovely outside, and part of me wants to futz in the yard, but the stronger part of me is less inclined. Maybe tomorrow.
Oh, yeah - the bagels and candies were much appreciated by the nurses and techs. But now there’s no chocolate in the house, and I WANT SOME NOW!!!
Did the lawn thing yesterday but I don’t consider it really spring until the tomatoes are in. Which reminds me I gotta get working on the garden area shortly. See you all later.
This would be an excellent year to plant tomatoes, perhaps even to put in more than normal. The harsh winter devestated many commercial crops and they’re in short supply and expensive now. Good call.
It is a simple fix. The doctor found no bleeding and said that he just needs to take iron supplements due to absorption issues from the GB. Honestly, I wish he’d never had that surgery. He’s had more heart attacks and problems since it than before he had it. But then, nobody has a crystal ball, do they?
I forgot to say earlier that we got one of those upsy-daisy tomato hanger thingies - we have several blooms already! We just planted cherry tomatoes this time.
We’ve had some resolution on the Dipsey situation. (The little neighbor dog who ended up with us.) His mama finally came home from training, and was very grateful to us for taking care of him, and kinda perturbed that her family was so negligent. She’s already brought him over to play twice in three days. She just leaves him for a few hours, instead of leaving him alone at her house. I don’t mind baby-sitting!
I got an update from my friends who had a baby last week. They’ve named him, and the name is perfectly nice… except the initials are ODD. Really? Did they not notice? Or did they really give their kid the initials ODD? That’s just begging for teasing on the playground.
Hello! Haven’t read but I will in the morning as I am off to bed. I am back from Tunisia for work and my friends wedding this weekend - awful awful hangover.
So, we’re about to start gardening. What will grow up here that I won’t kill? (Problem- I have killed cacti). I figure zuchinni and mint, to start. Anything else?
I’ve almost survived the day. Most of my laundry is done - I didn’t have enough left for a full load. **FCD **has been pretty mobile, and has actually done some work (he cracks me up sometimes) and I think he’s back in bed again. Supper was sorta “grab whatever” but assuming I get real sleep tonight, I’m going to make real food tomorrow. Too much junk eating these last few days.
Try beets and carrots, LiLi. I haven’t done beets before (first batch planted on Saturday), but I grew carrots last year with no planning or prep other than “Hey, I think I’ll throw these free seeds that I got in the dirt and see what happens” and they did great. They’re pretty hearty in cold weather too. Plus they’re tasty and good for you to boot!
Radishes and lettuce are easy, too, although you want to make sure to pick them before it gets hot in the summer.
Glad your Dad’s problem had a pretty easy solution, Sticky.
I’ve started some tomatoes from seed. We’ll see how they do. My started-from seed tomatoes were the best ones last year, so I’m hoping for a repeat. I think I have four varieties. Should have lots and lots. Worst case, I’ll make spaghetti sauce and freeze it. I wanted to start some seeds tonight outside, too, but forgot that I had a meeting to go to. So I guess I’ll try tomorrow.
It is spring. It was warm enough (50F-ish) that it rained earlier. Not snow, rain! Though I’d actually rather be outside in snow than rain…you don’t get as wet. But I was inside, and it smelled good. Rain here smells great.
Irk tomorrow. Oh well. The end of this week and most of next should be interesting; they’re moving us out of our normal office because they’re going to redo the floors in the hotel, and such redoing apparently involves noxious fumes and such and will take a few days. So starting Saturday for a few days I’ll be in a different office, with somewhat different phones…at least it’ll be different. And temporary.
