It’s can be pretty fluid, really. There is a huge strain of “topping from the bottom” in BDSM play. F’rinstance, a…let’s say friend of mine…is a natural top, who enjoys subbing on occasion. But when…he’s…subbing, it’s still a dominant role, still calling the shots.
In my experience “bottoming from the top” is less common, but happens. My…friend…has encountered some natural subs who enjoy the occasional topping as a role play exercise, and the occasional natural sub who thought he or she was a top but discovered differently over time. Sometimes it’s a matter of overcompensation, a sociocultural fear of being submissive, that drives people to try to pass as a dom. It can be uncomfortable for them and, from my…friend’s experience, they can be very sloppy doms.
How that might extrapolate to drop is left as an exercise for the reader.
