Experienced Unreal Tournament Players Here

I would like some feedback. Here at work we decided to play a multiplayer game after work hours. The powers that be decided on Unreal Tournament 2004 dvd. I’m fine with that, I usually have fun regardless of the game. Plus it seems like a good game for the newbies that have never played an online game fps before.

I’d like your opinions on a few things.

How is this game for smaller maps? i.e. 4/5 players.
The review I read talks about the great bot AI, but it never clearly says if bots are only for single game play. I’d like to suggest the use of bots in multiplayer if possible.

Any other comments would be appreciated. (except a comment about a bad choice of games, as this one has already been chosen, although we might move on to more later.)

One of my big beefs with UT2004 versus Classic UT is the overlarge maps. In some cases, they put too much effort into making the levels look pretty and not enough into making them fun. On the other hand, there are many many user maps.
I have no complaints about the bots in straight deathmatch play. Some of the more complicated team-based game types can get old fast.

Experienced? Yes. Good? mmmno.

For a while I was good. But it got to the point where the number of people online was such that enough of the really hardcore players were in every fast server so I became… not good.

I’m not sure if you can have a real online game including Bots. The bots were designed for offline multiplay with just yourself.

I haven’t played this game in a long time.

You can use bots in multiplayer, I just checked to confirm. It’s in the Game Rules screen in the Host Game setup. You can set it to autobalance teams using bots.

The Onslaught maps are pretty big for just 4 players, but a lot of the other game modes are really fun with that many people, especially Bombing Run.

I stopped playing because of the rampant cheating in the public servers. There were aimbots up the wazoo all of a sudden about a year or so ago. I got tired of being ceaselessly headshot with the lightning gun by people way beyond the fog cutoff. You, obviously, shouldn’t have a problem with that.

I definately agree… I’m really turned off to online play on public servers. If I can’t play in a controlled environment (i.e. my friends) then I won’t play online. It’s not fun to me getting slaughtered every 5 seconds.

It is also possible to set it up with all humans on one side and all bots on the other, which is eventually how we eventually played Onslaught (I think - the one with the power nodes and vehicles) We found a difficulty that made it challenging but winable.

I’ve been writing UT2004 levels lately, and I’m nearly ready to publish. I have them in testing mode right now; if anyone would like to try them I can either put them online for you to download or I can host a server.

So far, I’ve finished one deathmatch and three Onslaught maps. DM-Trenches is a fist gmae in a valley divided by WW-1 style trenched. ONS-Bulge is an onslaught based on the German breakout at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. ONS-Battlestar is my attempt at combat between spacecraft, with mixed results. ONS-Crater is set in a volcanic caldera (I was was hoping to use a real map of Tambora but couldn’t find one, so I improvised0

I play both UT 99 and 2004 on my LAN, and every 2 weeks or so a few people get together here and we have a fragfest. All my systems are set for UT99, but I only have 2 here that can do 2004 so I’m hoping to get some online play done.

The online servers are problematic for DM games because it seems that more cheaters play DM (must be the king of the hill mentality.) ONS games are best when played by cooperating groups, so I’m always looking for someone to team up with. I don’t play many of the other modes often, but CTF is cool and Assault is better in UT99. As far as user mods go, UnWheel is the only one I’ve downloaded- it plays much better if you have a steering wheel.
