Yet to be really answered the question would have to be asked in general terms about all modes of prostitution, and we’d also have to consider the upper-end market example. And *there *we would probably have more people puzzling about what’s the allure because at that level people are expected to not need it (e.g. what makes an Elliot Spitzer risk everything he strove for, to get pleasant things done to his penis by a young hottie @ $4K a trick? and what in Og’s name can Ashley Dupré do that’s so pleasant to penises that she could command $4K a trick?).

I could never do it, but I have seen the ‘crack ho’ video series where this average looking 30-40 something “good ol boy” type guy videos himself with a hand held camera getting serviced (oral-vaginal etc) by various low rent hookers. His MO is to ask them a synopsis of their life story and chat them up about their lives and circumstances, and that’s actually the most interesting part. A lot more interesting than the fairly perfunctory sex. Some of the stories they tell about what they are up to are pretty scary and some are funny. Most are both.

She was a VERY good looking woman who was very discreet and her clientele was generally very well off, but re the money that everyone was agog at, someone once made the point that $ 5,000 to Elliot Spitzer (his family was very wealthy) was effectively like a styrofoam cup full of pennies to a man making a middle class wage. If you can get serviced by a beautiful woman for the equivalent to (to you) of a cup of pennies that’s a bargain.
If you’re rich, why not get the highest quality escort money can buy? We have threads where someone doesn’t understand status symbols and despite it all people try to explain it, I wanted to know how people who use prostitutes get around the awkwardness and I’m a bible thumper.(awkwardness not being conductive to sexual excitement usually).

What I believe you believe, because you’ve written it explicitly in several posts above, is that ANY guy can get a girlfriend/wife/lover/sexbuddy. But as many others have responded, it just ain’t so. And you just don’t want to believe that.
It was a random memory of one man’s reason for using a prostitute, I often type tangentially related things in posts and it often derails the whole thing as people focus on the tangentially related thing.

It must surely be a common reason, although not the only reason. Plenty of posts above have mentioned other reasons. The related idea that you explicitly say you don’t get is why anybody could ever even get it up for a prostitute – even guys who have no other personal/social resources for getting a girlfriend (which you just don’t believe happens anyway).
Doing business with a commercial provider is a poor thin semblance (barely) for having an actual relationship, but the fact it, it’s the only poor thin semblance (barely) that a lot of guys can get. And when lonely, love-starved, companionship-starved, affection-starved, sex-starved people (especially guys, who tend to get horny) can’t get any (let alone all) of that – well, different people make different choices. Some can and will do business with a commercial provider, getting what they can get out of that. Others won’t find that sufficient to even get interested, so they won’t.
Others above have noted that ALL sex comes with a price. The most honest (indeed, the ONLY honest) comment I ever heard on this, came from a prostitute:

I don’t have any hard numbers as to how common this is, but it isn’t the modern way to meet a prostitute. Trolling for streetwalkers is a good way to get yourself arrested by an undercover cop (or a non-undercover cop hiding nearby). There are websites and Craigslist now (and maybe even an app for that! :eek:)
Many of your questions are already answered by me in one of the threads that got linked to… The allure to going to a prostitute depends entirely on the John:
- Some guys are disabled (or socially inept) and find it difficult to find a woman in real life.
- Some guys have been married for 30 years and have wives that aren’t up to it anymore (let alone blowjobs etc.)
- Some guys are divorced and never want to be ‘tied’ to a woman again.
- Some guys have the same taste in women as 30 years ago…it might be difficult for 50 year olds to find a willing 19 year old.
- Some guys just prefer paying, instead of the hassle of finding one night stands/girlfriends.
- Some guys have a large sex drive…where wives and girlfriends just aren’t enough.
- In certain settings prostitution can be combined with a fun day out.
For me, I don’t feel like a relationship (at the moment). Getting a one night stand is not a certainty for me and even when it happens will mostly still end with ‘Call me, ok?’. And it’s nice to have sex with girls that would otherwise be ‘outside my league’.
Since I’m in Europe, the whole ‘game’ is different as well; no streetwalkers, no finding out if your call girl had her pictures photoshopped.
