I was watching an old episode of “Inspector Morse” last night, and Morse and Hathaway were talking about masculinity and homosexuality. Hathaway said only real men eat Yorkie bars.
Can somebody explain the context to me? Wikipedia didn’t help.
Chunky chocolate bar, marketed (increasingly tongue-in-cheek) as suitable only for macho men.

Yorkie - It´s NOT for girls - YouTubeIs it better chocolate or worse than Cadbury?
The bar itself looks similar to a Snickers. Is my guess right?
If they’re the same as they were in the 70s and 80s, when I last tasted one, they’re fucking disgusting.
They’re the Madame Tussauds of chocolate; a waxy imitation of the real thing. Stick to Cadbury, or even better, Galaxy.
They are a bar of five of six solid blocks of chocolates. There was a jokey campaign back in the day about them being eaten by lorry drivers and very macho only for men.
In retrospect it could be taken very differently nowadays.
About same quality as cadburys Dairy Milk chocolate bars.
I never heard of this before. I assumed the thread title was a cutesy reference to the American York Peppermint Patty. From the commercial and the Wikipedia article, though, it appears that Yorkie Bars are sort of blocky chocolate bars that come in various types, from plain milk chocolate or dark chocolate to a variety of inclusions:
If I were marketing a bar For MEN! I’d probably fill it with habanero peppers and grit, or something.
Used to love them, still do. Raisin and biscuit my fave.
No, Yorkies are solid chocolate bars, with some varieties having bits mixed in. It’s not a layered thing like Snickers.
A closer U.S. analog seems to be the Chunky bar (though the shape is different). There’s only one variety of Chunky these days, with peanuts and raisins mixed in, but there were formerly other varieties, including one that was just milk chocolate with no extras.
Don’t want to nitpick but it couldn’t have been Morse and Hathaway. Morse’s sidekick was Lewis, later on he got his own series and Lewis’s sidekick was Hathaway.
You’re right, it was Inspector Lewis. One of those episodes where they keep hinting that Hathaway might be gay, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
As someone who was weaned on German, Belgian and Swiss chocolate and who used to be a chocolate taster for Nestlé, Yorkies are pretty horrible chocolate-ish bars.
If I remember correctly, there used to be a sign at York railway station stating “Welcome to York where the men are hunky and the chocolate’s chunky!”.
Nowadays? I think the tag line was ‘Don’t feed the Birds’ with the little crossed-out woman glyph c.2003-04. When it went, I couldn’t actually say.
