What the fuck is this shit? I don’t give two fucks about Tea Partiers and Patriot Day and all that other bullshit - I’m not American, I don’t give a fuck about your internal inability to be civil to each other, and this is hardly the time for partisan bullshit point scoring from EITHER the “lib” or the “conservative” side.
I simply pointed out that the NY Post’s reporting on other facets of today’s events has been suspect because of their rush to get “first”, so their report on ANYONE being in custody, nationality be damned, may be best confirmed by other sources before being taken as gospel.
On one board with a lot of libertarian-leaning members, one of the first and strongest reactions was along the lines of “I wonder what freedoms this will be used as an excuse to take away this time?”
I’m torn between thinking this inappropriate and understanding where it’s coming from.
Sorry, Twix - didn’t see yours before I posted!
People are going to be grateful and emotional and overwrought when something like this happens - when emotions are high, so are judgements and passions. It’s all related.
I’m glad that people are continuing to post that their loved ones are reporting in. I’m just hoping now that the Newtown VIPs didn’t lose anyone today - that would just be too awful for words.
Really? Really? This is the appropriate time and place for that?
And before you say anything - I am totally on the side of gun controls and other wapons limitations, I just don’t think that an at-the-time thread is the appropriate place to dig this shit up in.
Take my instructions to refrain from political and theological debate as covering all political and theological debate, including not just the posts that I included when issuing those instructions but any other posts that include similar material.
Take it to Great Debates or the Pit if you want to engage with something that someone said.
I will start issuing warnings as necessary for ignoring moderator instructions.
Sierra Indigo, Laciel, I realize that those two most recent posts were made while I was writing mine, so I’m not going to warn you for them, but drop it now.
Someone asked a question and I answered it. If this means more video surveillance, and checking of backpacks with strict entry and exit controls to these sort of events then so be it.
I can’t imagine how this tragedy wouldn’t result in the above.
I really hate TV people who say “I don’t want to speculate” and then go on to speculate their asses off. The problem with all this real-time coverage is that everyone is talking over everyone else and nobody takes time to check anything.
I hope all the Dopers in Boston are okay, along with everyone’s family and friends.
Just in case anyone local was thinking of going to give blood, the Red Cross of Eastern MA just put out a message on Twitter: “Due to the generosity of our donors we don’t need blood at this time. Please schedule for a future donation http://redcrossblood.org”
Bob Ducca I saw that same picture (cowboy hat is distinctive, as is the wounded man’s complexion) on a national news site a couple of hours ago in which his face was not obscured and his legs were not … well, like that. It is possible this is a very sick photoshop, particularly since you aren’t going to put on a tourniquet and then just leave something like that waving in the breeze – as an EMT I would at the very least wrap my inside-out jacket or shirt around the patient. I’ll look for the original photo I saw but as new stories come in the old ones are getting buried.
Noodles, I think it’s far more likely that the “nicer” photographs are the ones that are 'shopped. I’ve seen that photo pop up in a few places where either the… stumps (ugh, I’m sorry, there’s just no better way to put this) are blurred out, or the photo is cropped so that you can’t really see what happened. I saw one that looked like it had just been minimally 'shopped to get rid of the worst of the gore.
I saw that photograph within the first 30-45 minutes after the explosion. If it is a photoshop, it’s a very fast and very good one.
Okay, too late to edit, but you guys are right, I found the picture on the ABC news website and I had not remembered it was cropped. Still stand by my instinct to protect the injured area in some way though.
