NBC News is reporting an MIT police officer suffered life-threatening injuries.
Yikes. Not a good week for the greater Boston Metropolitan area.
Wonder if this is related? Jesus, Boston can’t catch a break right now.
CNN is reporting the officer that was shot in the MIT incident has died. Still no word on whether it is related, and the shooter appears to still be at large.
It sounds to me like random city crime that just happened to occur on the MIT campus, as opposed to anything actually targeting MIT.
At least, I really hope so. 
The MIT police are all great people. Unlike a lot of college “police”, they are actual legal police officers, not rent-a-cops, and I think most of them were previously on the Boston/Cambridge/etc. force. They did a fantastic job of being understanding of all us weirdo nerds when I was there. I hope the officer is okay.
So, DianaG is in Boston, right? I sent her a PM a few days ago and she hasn’t replied. Maybe she’s got other things to do or she just isn’t in the mood to reply but can someone who knows her outside the forum confirm that she’s ok?
No reason to consider the MIT incident is related. It could just be the stupidest common criminal alive who tried to break into a building while the police presence is at maximum level.

Apparently the MIT shooter is a black male, so definitely not one of the two known suspects in the bombing.
No, he passed it on to the FBI on Monday; just tonight, when he saw the pictures released by the FBI, he realised that he’d caught Suspect # 2 on it. That’s exactly why the FBI released the initial photos; to get people to review their own pictures to see if they can find anything.
It seems there is something going on that may or not be related to the bombing. It does appear to have a connection to the shooting at MIT.

The last refresh said one of the suspects was shot and being taken to the hospital and the other is being held at gun point. I don’t think it is clear if they are the bombing suspects or the ones in the MIT shooting.

I don’t know about that but right now CNN is showing the live feed from WCVB in Boston. The police have someone on the ground spread eagled and he is not black, very def sandy blond/brown haired white guy. This is in Watertown. Not sure if this is related to the MIT shooting much less the marathon bombing but it sure as hell has a lot of law enforcement and media on the scene.
Holy shit. Reports of a massive firefight, with explosions, possibly a police vehicle being carjacked. This is insane.

There is a massive multi-agency response in Watertown, not too far from MIT. Gunfire and explosions were reported. Two suspects reported in custody.
Homeland security is reportedly involved in the operation. A suspect was told to remove his clothing then was taken into custody.

All of this could be an understandable over response to common criminal activity.
